Whether the Florida Gators have reached the end of the road with head coach Billy Napier will be determined in the 48 hours following Saturday’s late-afternoon tilt with the Mississippi State Bulldogs. The focus for three hours Saturday will be the Gators entering their second off week with a level of momentum, which the Bulldogs as an opponent can provide.
While Mississippi State opened the season 4-0 with a win over Arizona State, it was unable to even move the ball two weeks ago against Texas A&M. However, unlike the Gators, the Bulldogs are entering off a bye week, a circumstance that again explains why Florida’s toughest-in-the-nation schedule is even more difficult than advertised. In other words, MSU could have some tricks up its collective sleeve, especially early.
Napier insisted earlier this week that sophomore quarterback DJ Lagway is not only 100% healthy but operating better than he has since the end of the 2024 season. That certainly proved itself out last week considering some of the incredible throws Lagway made to his receivers against TAMU. However, the Gators ultimately got doubled up in that contest and will finish below .500 through their first seven games regardless of the outcome inside Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.
What will go down Saturday? Let’s take a closer look with this game day preview breaking down the contest.

» Florida is 35-19-2 all-time against Mississippi State with a 19-8-1 record in Gainesville and victories in four of five meetings dating back to 2005 and 16 of the last 17 in The Swamp.
» The Gators had not gone 1-3 or worse through the first four games of a season in 39 years (1986).
» UF’s 13 returning starters were the 10th most in the FBS and second most in the SEC.
» Florida entered the 2025 season with the toughest schedule in the nation for the second straight year. UF’s 2024 slate was the most difficult in college football history at the start of the campaign, and its 2025 slate is shaping up to be the most difficult at the conclusion of the year.
» The Gators this season played four straight top 10 teams for the first time in program history, going 1-3 in those games. No other FBS program has faced such a stretch since 1968.
» The defense has forced turnovers in 16 of the last 18 games with multiple takeaways in 13 of those contests. A 12-game takeaway streak came to an end in Week 4.
» Florida had allowed 20 points or fewer in seven straight games before giving up 26 its last time out, but it has now given up 21+ points in each of the last three, 27 points per game. The Gators were 14-0 under Napier when allowing 20 points or fewer before losing back to back games in Weeks 2-3. UF now stands 14-2 under Napier in that situation.
» Florida is 17-6 at home, 4-12 on the road and 1-4 in neutral-site games under Napier (5-16 away from home). It has a 4-17 mark in its last 21 true road games dating back to the prior regime.
» The Gators under Napier are 18-2 when leading after the third quarter, 17-6 when leading at halftime, 18-8 when scoring first and 17-5 when rushing for at least 150 yards. However, UF is 3-16 under Napier when opponents score first, 1-16 when scoring less than 21 points, 6-21 when allowing 21+ points, 4-17 when tied or trailing at halftime, 3-21 when tied or trailing after the third quarter and 4-16 when being outrushed.
» Florida is 5-17 against AP Top 25 teams under Napier, 4-12 over the last three seasons. That drought extends to 11-25 against ranked opponents (2-12 vs. top five teams, 7-15 vs. top 10 teams) since 2018. In that same span, UF is 42-14 against unranked opponents.
» The Gators have scored in 467 consecutive games, an NCAA record.
Spread: Florida -9.5 | O/U: 51.5
Florida being favored by nearly 10 points against any team should halt one in their place, but particularly against an SEC opponent that went up and down the field with Tennessee just a few weeks ago. With Mississippi State gettin two weeks to prepare for UF, there’s upset potential here. Yes, the Gators offense appears to have improved as Lagway’s live reps have increased, but while the Bulldogs have a porous rush defense, they are solid in the secondary. MSU can also move the ball through the air, and Florida’s banged up secondary may be down two key pieces in the game.
While we’ve been on point with sides and particularly totals this season, this game could legitimately go either way in terms of the final score. The likelihood of a 34-31 final feels to be equal to that of 20-13. There’s no telling which way this will go. The Gators defense has generally been effective against second- and third-tier offenses, however, so better to lean toward the under in this scenario.
2025 record: 4-2 ATS, 5-1 O/U
» Uniforms: Florida will throwback threads featuring its traditional color scheme of blue jerseys, white pants and orange helmets.
