Continuing to address one of the program’s biggest roster needs, the Florida Gators on Sunday added their second linebacker from a Big Ten power this offseason. Michigan linebacker Deuce Spurlock committed to join Florida out of the transfer portal coming out of a weekend visit to UF.
Spurlock, a former three-star prospect from the Class of 2022, played just two games this season. As such, he will likely join the Gators as a redshirt freshman with four years of eligibility remaining. Spurlock was twice declared the defensive player of the week for the Wolverines’ scout team during the season.
There were a number of Power Five programs hoping to add Spurlock out of the portal, but Florida was his first — and expected only — visit since deciding to transfer. He is seen as a high-upside prospect, and given Florida’s depth issues, he will likely step in as a rotational player at first in 2023.
Head coach Billy Napier has generally put a premium on targeting transfers with multiple years of eligibility remaining, and Spurlock certainly fits that bill. He will have plenty of time to develop within the system.
Spurlock is the fifth transfer Gators have acquired this offseason along with newly graded four-star defensive end Caleb Banks (Louisville) and three-star quarterback Graham Mertz (Wisconsin) as well as LB Teradja Mitchell (Ohio State) and defensive tackle Cam’Ron Jackson (Memphis), both of whom have yet to be regraded by 247Sports.
