The Florida Gators on Thursday announced that head coach Billy Napier will continue in his role with the team, presumably confirming that he will return for the 2025 season — his fourth with the program — despite compiling a 15-18 record (8-13 SEC) in the middle of his third campaign. This with four games remaining in the 2024 season and Florida currently sitting at 4-4 with all four losses coming to teams currently ranked among the top 10 nationally.

“I wanted to let you know that Billy Napier will continue as head football coach of the Florida Gators,” athletic director Scott Stricklin wrote in a message to fans. “As we’ve seen these past several weeks, the young men on this team represent what it means to be a Gator. Their resolve, effort and execution are evident in their performance and growth each week — building a foundation that promises greater success next season and beyond.

“UF’s commitment to excellence and a championship-caliber program is unwavering. In these times of change across college athletics, we are dedicated to a disciplined, stable approach that is focused on long-term, sustained success for Gator athletics, recruits and fans. I am confident that Billy will meet the challenges and opportunities ahead.”

Napier was hired by Florida coming off a 40-12 (27-5 Sun Belt) effort at Louisiana. A former assistant under Nick Saban and Dabo Swinney, he similarly touted his own process as a means of turning around a Gators program that has largely disappointed following the departure of Urban Meyer in 2010.

Instead of seeing immediate improvement as some of its peers did when bringing in new coaches ahead of the 2022 season, Florida has largely crated under Napier. His consecutive losing seasons are the first by a single Gators coach since Raymond Wolf in 1946-47, and given Florida is set to be an underdog in three of its four remaining games, he may deliver three straight losing campaigns for the first time since Josh Cody in 1936-38.

The Gators are 2-13 against AP Top 25 opponents under Napier, 1-8 over the last two seasons. Florida is also 1-10 against its most notable rivals (Florida State, Georgia, Miami, LSU, Tennessee) in that span with two such games remaining in 2024.

Napier’s recruiting acumen was supposed to be a defining trait that would help turn the Gators around. While recruiting classes had seen steady improvement from No. 17 in his 2022 transition to No. 12 (2023) and No. 7 (2024), Florida currently sits No. 51 for 2025 — partially because prospects have been unwilling to commit to a struggling problem whose coach’s job status has been in question.

Despite some of the Gators’ recruiting successes, they have experienced problems bringing in significant talent at key positions — such as offensive line — and Napier’s staff was also slow to capitalize on the importance of both the transfer portal and name, image and likeness rights as a means of fielding a competitive football team in the sport’s current landscape.

Florida started the 2024 season in the dumps with an excruciating loss to Miami and confounding performance against Texas A&M. The Gators did appear to turn their momentum significantly coming out of the first off week. However, since then, the program has suffered significant injuries against the best opponents it has faced, ultimately losing games it led late against Tennessee and Georgia.
