While the Florida Gators appear to be on a downward trajectory, the No. 4 Miami Hurricanes may be surging to highs the program has not experienced in decades. Florida has a massive chance to stop that momentum cold on Saturday night at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, as the teams conclude a home-and-home series that will mark their 58th meeting all-time.

The Gators have spent most of the last two weeks as a national punchline with head coach Billy Napier’s struggles across the board and sophomore quarterback DJ Lagway’s declining play the strongest topics of conversation. This as Florida continues a stretch of three straight games against top 10 opponents with the toughest schedule in the nation — for the second straight year — just getting started.

While Lagway is completing 71% of his passes this season, his 6.3 yard-per-attempt average and ratio of five touchdowns to six interceptions has been immensely concerning. The Gators will only go as far as Lagway will take them, which has proven itself over the last two games.

Florida concluded Week 1 standing 14-0 under Napier when holding an opponent to 20 points or fewer in a game. Despite the defense doing the same in Week 2 and Week 3, the Gators lost consecutive contests, only able to post 26 combined points in those games.

Suddenly, history is at stake Saturday night — and it can go in either a positive or negative direction.

It is possible that an unranked Florida team wins its first road game against a ranked opponent since 2018 and first against a top five team since 1963. It’s possible UF beats its first top five team since 2020. It’s also possible the Gators fall to 1-3 on the season, marking the program’s worst start through four weeks in nearly four decades (1986).

What will go down Saturday in South Florida? Let’s take a look.

Florida vs. Miami game notes

» Florida trails 30-27 in the all-time series with Miami; the teams are 14-14 when playing in South Florida. The Gators have not won a road game in this series since 1985, going 0-3 since (1987, 2003, 2013). The teams have split the last four meetings with the Canes winning eight of 10 dating back to 1986.
» UF has not defeated a top five team on the road since 2009. It has not beaten any top five team since 2020 and not done so as an unranked program since 2002. An unranked Gators team has not defeated a top five opponent on the road since 1963.
» Florida has not gone 1-3 or worse through the first four games of a season in 39 years (1986).
» An unranked Gators team has not defeated a ranked opponent on the road since 2018.
» Florida’s 13 returning starters were the 10th most in the FBS and second most in the SEC.
» Florida entered the 2025 season with the toughest schedule in the nation for the second straight year. UF’s 2024 slate was the most difficult in college football history at the start of the campaign.
» The Gators defense had forced turnovers in 14 of 15 games — including an active streak of 12 games — with multiple takeaways in 12 of those contests.
» Florida has allowed 20 points or fewer in seven straight games. It was previously 14-0 under Napier in such situations before losing back to back games over the last two weeks. UF now stands 14-2 under Napier when allowing 20 points or fewer.
» After UF stood as the only FBS team that did not commit a penalty in Week 1, it has committed 18 miscues over the last two weeks.
» Florida is 16-6 at home, 4-10 on the road and 1-4 in neutral-site games under Napier (5-14 away from home). Dating back to the prior regime, UF is on a 5-2- drought away from The Swamp with a 4-15 mark in its last 19 true road games.
» The Gators under Napier are 17-2 when leading after the third quarter, 16-6 when leading at halftime, 17-8 when scoring first and 16-5 when rushing for at least 150 yards. However, UF is 3-14 under Napier when opponents score first, 1-14 when scoring less than 21 points, 5-19 when allowing 21+ points, 4-15 when tied or trailing at halftime, 3-19 when tied or trailing after the third quarter and 4-14 when being outrushed.
» Florida is 4-15 against AP Top 25 teams under Napier, 3-10 over the last three. That drought extends to 10-23 against ranked opponents (2-10 vs. top five teams, 6-13 vs. top 10 teams) since 2018. In that same span, UF is 42-14 against unranked opponents.
» The Gators have scored in 464 consecutive games, an NCAA record.

Florida vs. Miami prediction, analysis

Spread: Florida +7 | O/U: 50

There should, theoretically, be a clear handicap on this game given both Florida and Miami played a common opponent at home already this season in South Florida. The Gators were upset 18-16 in Week 2, whereas the Canes dominated 49-12 in Week 3. While that may somewhat indicate that the teams’ defenses are on par, it’s extremely difficult to determine what Florida’s offense can be at its high end considering it completely gave that game away in The Swamp, taking 14-21 points off its own board.

Considering UF played LSU so tight last week — another game it absolutely could have won if not for Lagway’s struggles, including five interceptions — it stands to reason that this will be competitive as well. Here’s the problem: Miami eviscerated Florida in The Swamp last season, 41-17, and while Hard Rock Stadium is hardly a difficult place to play on an average week given the horrific Canes fan base, it will likely be sold out and raucous for a night game against an in-state rival.

If Lagway turns the ball over early in the game, the likelihood of pressure mounting under those lights and in front of that crowd is significant. While the Gators are motivated for a level of revenge from last season, UM legends will surely be all over the sideline gassing up their side in a game that would allow Miami to plant its flag further up the state and take advantage of Florida’s declining status.

The hook created hesitation initially, but it disappeared as of press time making the hosts the right side. Either way, the projected score of 28-21 is entirely possible, though considering UF has not scored 21 points an FBS opponent this season, to hit the over, the margin will be greater than that.

2025 record: 2-1 ATS, 2-1 O/U

Odds & ends

» Uniforms: Florida will wear its traditional away look of white jerseys, blue pants and orange helmets.
