TWO BITS: Meyer and Tebow, Floyd and Elam

1 » Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer and former Florida Gators quarterback Tim Tebow went out for dinner in Morristown, NJ recently in a sit down that was reportedly not completely focused on trading stories and favorite bible verses. According to the New York Post, Meyer “pitched Tebow on the idea of helping him recruit for the Buckeyes” while the player “focused on the food, even picking at Meyer’s meal of [pappardelle] after having plowed through his own.” It should be noted that the Post’s story is primarily focused on how Tebow consumed “four heaping plates of food during a single meal” and not the topic of conversation between the two diners.

2 » With the Gators now at 3-0 and 2-0 in SEC play, NFL analysts are beginning pay extra attention to some of Florida’s most talented players. In the latest editions of their Big Board and Top 32, respectively, Mel Kiper, Jr. and Todd McShay each listed one UF player as talented enough to be selected in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft. Kiper placed junior defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd at No. 20 on his Big Board ($), noting that “his quickness is more menacing on the interior and he has a great burst, drawing double-teams and penetrating.” McShay entered junior safety Matt Elam at No. 27 on his list of the Top 32 ($), saying that “he’s simply playing too well to be kept out of the rankings.” He continued: “He’s solid in run support and coverage, and always seems to be around the ball, like when he was making 10 tackles last week against Tennessee.”

Two five-star recruits for the Gators in 2010, Floyd and Elam receiving recognition and interest at this point is not surprising. It has long been believed that both players could leave the team early though a source close to Elam’s family told OGGOA last week that Abe Elam, Matt’s brother and a seven-year NFL veteran currently playing for Kansas City, would only allow Matt to depart if he is a sure-fire first-round selection.

  1. MAR says:

If at all, Tim needs to recruit for his alma mater, not OSU.

  2. Daniel M. says:

I have a difficult time believing that Tim would recruit the the Ohio State Bucknuts.

“Hey Wuerffel, Vince Dooley is on line one, something about helping out with recruiting.”

  3. SaraGator says:

I hope Timmy turned him down.

  4. Gatorgrad79 says:

Would be very disappointed if TT recruited for osu, however the idea that Urban Liar would ask such a thing is right in character….

  5. gator says:

    Meyer is such a WEASEL!!!!

  6. Tractorr says:

That is probably why he was not really paying that much attention to Meyer. Though I think Tebow respects and cares about Meyer, I also think he knows that he has the whole Gator Nation behind him and if he started recruiting for OSU many of us would have a very different opinion of him.

  7. npgator says:

You cannot blame them if they are sure first rounders but if not they should stay since they will be next year.

  8. G2 says:

No respect for Urban anymore. Tebow should be calling our recruits, that would be huge. Can NFL guys do that sort of thing?

  9. George says:

Urban Meyer has some nerve asking Tebow to do that. I think most GATOR fans want to find peace in that whole Urban debacle of him (retiring, unretiring, 7-6 season, health issues, stress related, inflamed esophagus, disconnected, need to spend more time with my family only to take the OSU job 1yr later) leaving UF. But to ask one of the most beloved GATORS in history to recruit against FL? Just add that to the list of “Reasons its always been about Urb & only Urb”.

  10. Jesse C says:

What is Urban smoking? Timmy’s loyaty is all gator!

  11. Joonas says:

Shouldn’t Dan Mullen be the one asking for Tebow’s help in recruiting since he had to convince Meyer to go after Tebow in the first place?

  12. Gators22 says:

First off, from my understanding it’s NOT legal within the NCAA rules for an alum to contact recruits.

But, it MAY be legal for a non-alum from OSU like Tebow to do so. I bet that’s the way Meyer couched it.

PS: I happen to know for a fact that Meyer quietly did this a lot at Florida, asking very high profile players to recruit.

  13. Gators22 says:

As a follow up, to my earlier post, Meyer would ask former UF players if it was okay to give their cell phone number to a recruit and if the recruit were to call, would they answer it and talk with them.

  14. Joe says:

I don’t remember Spurrier asking Danny to recruit for South Carolina. Meyer is such a douche. I hope we NEVER put his name in the Ring of Honor.

  15. Gabe says:

I would be very surprised if Tebow started helping Meyer in recruiting for Ohio State.

  16. GoGators says:

In return, Meyer will help Tebow out of Jets’ special team??
