The resurgent defense that boosted the Florida Gators to four straight wins ending the 2024 season will undergo a dramatic shift this offseason with head coach Billy Napier hiring two new co-defensive coordinators to coach alongside … co-defensive coordinator Ron Roberts. Napier will be adding Robert Bala as co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach, according to CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz.
Roberts will remain in his role as “executive head coach – defense” with Bala leading linebackers and co-defensive coordinator Vinnie Sunseri focusing on safeties. Bala and Sunseri were both non-coordinator assistants at Washington last season in Year 1 under head coach Jedd Fisch.
Bala only has two years of Power Four experience previously serving as LB coach at Alabama (2023). He has only coordinated defenses for his alma mater Southern Utah (2018-21) and Palomar (2011-16), a community college in San Diego where he also played.
Known as a strong recruiter for Washington, Bala was surely bothered that Fisch did not at least promote him to co-defensive coordinator after both Ryan Walters and Steve Belichick left the Huskies program this offseason.
Recent NCAA rule changes provide universities with additional flexibility to hire coaches who used to be categorized as “analysts” but can now be given more formal titles and aid with on-field coaching. The hiring of Bala exceeds the prior 10-assistant limit that programs had to abide, so while he may come on as an “analyst,” he will presumably be paid a much higher salary given his title.
The move surely makes Florida the only team in the nation with three defensive coordinators, two offensive line coaches, a head coach that calls offensive plays and no formal special teams coordinator. (Technically, Joe Houston is a senior special teams analyst, and given those aforementioned NCAA rules changes, he is now able to coach on the field. However, by title, UF has not prioritized the position.)
The Gators announced the hiring of Sunseri last week, nearly two months after parting ways with Austin Armstrong and about a month after Sunseri accepted a defensive coordinator role at Jacksonville State. He only had one year of Power Four coaching experience spending the prior three seasons coaching running backs for the New England Patriots under Bill Belichick. Prior to that, he served as a defensive coaching assistant with the Patriots in 2020 and a graduate assistant under Nick Saban at Alabama in 2019.
As was the case with Armstrong, both Bala and Sunseri are being given prominent roles with immensely limited experience. Why is Florida overpaying (by title) and hiring inexperienced coaches with limited pedigrees to important positions while rivals and similarly distinguished programs bring in veterans, top assistants from other teams and some of the best names in the industry to fill their jobs?
Furthermore, why is Napier adding more defensive coaches while continuing to ignore the obvious move he needs to make in hiring a play-calling offensive coordinator? Unlike the defense, which saw massive improvements under Roberts in 2024, the offense needs to be innovated the unit top-down, and a true coordinator would take pressure off his shoulders on game day where he continues to struggle managing multiple responsibilities.
Not only did Napier fill the open staff role with another defensive coach, he’s added one beyond the no-longer-strict 10-assistant limit. This despite, for the last three years, the offense being a play caller away from performing better. Napier has insisted on doing that himself while simultaneously trying to manage games and his roster.
The idea must be that Roberts only wants to call plays and move around the defense no longer desiring to serve as a position coach given he spent 2024 leading the linebacking group.
The Gators will have two new defensive assistants in 2025 after replacing three defensive assistants ahead of the 2024 season. Bala will be the fifth coach to hold a defensive coordinator title of some kind in the last four seasons.
