FOUR BITS: Wilbekin, Macklin, Reed, Beal, Miller

1 » The first session of the NBA Summer League began on Saturday and will last from July 5-11 in Orlando, Florida. Only two of the 10 teams participating have former Florida Gators on their rosters with rookie point guard Scottie Wilbekin playing for the Memphis Grizzlies and center Vernon Macklin getting run with the Orlando Magic. Macklin posted two points and two boards in 17 minutes on Saturday, while Wilbekin finished with five assists, two rebounds, a steal and a turnover in 13 minutes. Below is the rest of the Orlando schedule; all games air live nationally on NBA TV.

2 » Though concussion issues cut short his rookie season, tight end Jordan Reed continues to draw praise from members of the Washington football team. Quarterback Robert Griffin III told FOXSports.com this week that he is thrilled with how well Reed played during workouts this offseason. “I think he’s one of the most talented tight ends in the league,” he said. “He’ll have an opportunity to show that. He’s a guy that runs some of the best routes I’ve ever seen. … If he knows what he’s doing, where he’s going and he knows how he’s trying to get there, you can’t cover him. That’s a good asset to have. … You want to throw it to a guy that’s going to catch it every time. You want to throw it to a guy who is going to secure that catch.”

3 » Washington Wizards guard Bradley Beal sat down for a question-and-answer session with SLAMOnline.com, touching on a number of topics including his relationship with point guard John Wall, formerly of Kentucky. Beal explained that he Wall get into it at times because of their respective allegiances. “We always have little rivalries,” he said. “When we play each other there are always little bets that we make. Like he had to wear a onesie last year – like a pajama outfit – because [Kentucky] lost [to Florida].”

4 » The Grizzlies want free agent G Mike Miller back, and Miller similarly wants to end his career in Memphis, but it is looking more and more like money may be an issue in seeing that mutually-desired result. According to CBSSports.com’s Gary Parrish, Miller is seriously considering playing elsewhere with the Oklahoma City Thunder “among the franchises also pursuing Miller.” The Thunder have been after Miller for years, expressing interest in him each of the last three times he has been a free agent. Factors such as relationships and playing time have led Miller elsewhere previously but this time Oklahoma City could very well get its man. At 34 years old, Miller will likely ink a two- or three-year deal worth $12-15 million.
