Basketball

The pressure ratchets up for No. 4 Florida Gators basketball, which has turned in its top-five ranking to end the regular season for the No. 1 seed in the South Region of the 2026 NCAA Tournament. Listed as the fourth top seed in the field, Florida faces the No. 16-seed Prairie View A&M Panthers on Friday in a first-round game that will actually serve as the second meeting between the programs.

Prairie View came from behind to oust Lehigh, 67-55, in the First Four, advancing into one of four play-in spots in March Madness. Its reward is a meeting with the defending national champions, who are eyeing a seventh Final Four appearance and fifth opportunity to play for a national championship in program history.

Whether the Gators can climb the mountain again remains to be seen, but they enter the friendly confines of Tampa, Florida, with arguably the best frontcourt in the nation after starting in North Carolina one year ago with arguably the best backcourt in the nation.

Juniors center Rueben Chinyelu and forwards Thomas Haugh and Alex Condon are three of five starters who average double digits in scoring with Chinyelu averaging a double-double of 11.2 points and 11.5 rebounds per game entering the first round.

Guards senior Xaivian Lee and sophomore Boogie Fland round out the starting five, though neither is shooting well from long range, which generally fuels teams in NCAA Tournament competition as it did a year ago for Florida behind Walter Clayton Jr., Alijah Martin and Will Richard.

The pieces are again in place for the Gators to make a run in March Madness, and it all begins this weekend in the Sunshine State. What will go down Friday evening as Florida begins its sojourn in the 2026 NCAA Tournament? Let’s find out.

Prediction and analysis

Spread: Florida -35.5 | O/U: 155.5

The Gators enter this matchup as the largest favorite in NCAA Tournament competition since 1999 and the third-largest in the seeding era of March Madness. That’s largely due to Florida’s overwhelming size and astounding defensive proficiency, which led it to its first SEC regular-season title since 2014.

While the Gators were the hottest team in the nation entering the postseason — winners of 12 straight games — they struggled shooting in the SEC Tournament and nearly coughed up their No. 1 seed as a consequence. Still, Florida is one of only four teams to rank in the top 10 in offensive and defensive efficiency, and it has gone up against one of the most difficult schedules in the nation. In other words, the Gators are not only talented but tested.

UF ranks 10th in scoring margin (14.0 points), but it is 0-3 against the spread this season when attempting to cover games in which it is favored by 28 points or more. The Gators went 3-3 against the spread on their way to a national title last season, failing to cover as a 28.5-point favorite against Norfolk State (won by 26). UF has also beaten No. 16 seeds by an average of 30.3 points per meeting.

Playing a 1-16 game like this is ill-advised, but Prairie View would be the lean. The spread suggests an expected outcome of 96-60 Florida, but it’s difficult to see the Panthers reaching that total if the Gators play top-tier defense, and UF will likely pull its starters should it get up by 25-30 points, so lean under.

2025-26 records: 0-0 ATS, 0-0 O/U
