The end of the Billy Napier era came later than many expected given the Florida Gators’ level of play over the last four seasons, but it has arrived nonetheless. While many of the same pieces remain in place as Florida matches up with the No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs at EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville, Florida, there is at least a level of optimism both going into and coming out of the game.
The Florida-Georgia game used to be, at worst, a 50-50 proposition for the Gators. However, after a sustained level of unprecedented success with Florida winning 13 of 14 meetings from 1990-2003, Georgia has straight up dominated the series with wins in seven of the last eight meetings since 2017. It marks the Dawgs’ third-best streak in the rivalry, one the Gators have been nowhere close to ending of late.
Florida has lost four straight head-to-head meetings, dropping those games by an average of 21.5 points while being unable to score more than 20 points or prevent Georgia from posting at least 34 in any of those games. The Gators did appear as if they had an opportunity to flip that trend last season, only for then-freshman quarterback DJ Lagaway to get injured before halftime, turning a 13-6 lead into a 34-20 defeat.
Lagway is as healthy as he’s been all season entering this year’s edition of the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party. His playmakers are not, however, with two of Florida’s top four receivers and both of its primary backup running backs out for the game.
There will also be two new voices around Lagway over the contest’s 60 minutes with Billy Gonzales taking over as interim coach for Napier and Steve Spurrier Jr. working with Lagway on the field between possessions. Quarterbacks coach Ryan O’Hara will replace Napier in Lagway’s ear, having a direct line to his helmet from the booth above the field.
It’s unlikely the Gators look that different Saturday as they will be running the same playbook with most of the same people in place. However, Gonzales hopes the operation will run differently with less time between plays and an opening of the playbook that should allow playmakers to get more touches and operate better in space.
What’s certain Saturday is that the pageantry will be on full display in Jacksonville as it is every year for the Florida-Georgia game. This also marks the last time until 2028 that the Gators and Dawgs will meet in Jacksonville due to EverBank Stadium construction. The game will be played closer to Georgia in 2026 (Mercedes-Benz Satdium in Atlanta) and closer to Florida in 2027 (Raymond James Stadium in Tampa) before returning to Jacksonville.
What will go down Saturday? Let’s take a closer look with this game day preview breaking down the Cocktail Party.

» Florida trails 56-44-2 all-time against Georgia, though the Gators have won 22 of the last 35 meetings since 1990. The Dawgs lead 50-41-1 in Jacksonville with four straight wins and victories in seven of the last eight meetings since 2017.
» UF has neither scored more than 20 points nor allowed fewer than 34 against UGA since 2020, losing the last four meetings by an average of 21.5 points.
» An unranked Gators team has not defeated a ranked Dawgs team since 2014, and it has not done so against a top-five Georgia team since 2002.
» UF has not defeated a top-five team since it took down UGA in 2020.
» Interim coaches at Florida are 14-9 all-time, 4-2 in their debuts and 3-3 against ranked opponents. An interim Gators coach has never played a top-five team.
» Florida opened 1-3, not previously starting with that poor of a record through the first four games of a season in 39 years (1986).
» The Gators’ 13 returning starters were the 10th most in the FBS and second most in the SEC.
» Florida entered the 2025 season with the toughest schedule in the nation for the second straight year. UF’s 2024 slate was the most difficult in college football history at the start of the campaign, and its 2025 slate on its way to remaining the most difficult at the conclusion of the year, too.
» The Gators this season played four straight top 10 teams for the first time in program history, going 1-3 in those games. No other FBS program has faced such a stretch since 1968.
» The defense has forced turnovers in 17 of the last 19 games with multiple takeaways in 14 of those contests. A 12-game takeaway streak came to an end in Week 4.
» Florida had allowed 20 points or fewer in seven straight games but has since given up 21+ points in four straight games. The Gators were 14-0 under Napier when allowing 20 points or fewer before losing back to back games in Weeks 2-3. UF now stands 14-2 since Napier was hired in that situation.
» Florida is 18-6 at home, 4-12 on the road and 1-4 in neutral-site games since the start of Napier’s tenure (5-16 away from home). It has a 4-17 mark in its last 21 true road games dating back to the prior regime.
» The Gators since Napier took over are 19-2 when leading after the third quarter, 18-6 when leading at halftime, 18-8 when scoring first and 18-5 when rushing for at least 150 yards. However, UF is 3-16 since Napier was hired when opponents score first, 1-16 when scoring less than 21 points, 7-21 when allowing 21+ points, 4-17 when tied or trailing at halftime, 3-21 when tied or trailing after the third quarter and 4-16 when being outrushed.
» Florida is 5-17 against AP Top 25 teams since the start of Napier’s tenure, 4-12 over the last three seasons. That drought extends to 11-25 against ranked opponents (2-12 vs. top five teams, 7-15 vs. top 10 teams) since 2018. In that same span, UF is 42-14 against unranked opponents.
» The Gators have scored in 468 consecutive games, an NCAA record.
Spread: Florida +7 | O/U: 50.5
While Only Gators is 11-3 overall picking Gators game this season, on the surface, there has been no easier prognostication than this game. (Does that mean it will likely go the other way.) Let’s face facts here: Florida has lost four straight games to Georgia by 21.5 points per contest. It has not held the Dawgs under 34 points nor been able to score three touchdowns in any of those games.
Yes, Georgia is shaky this season despite its top-five ranking. Yes, Florida is more talented than it has been in any of those aforementioned meetings. The problem? The Dawgs are almost entirely healthy where as the Gators have 13 players out, including eight starters or top-tier contributors. Those eight are many players who were counted in the evaluation of that narrowed talent gap.
Specifically, UF will be playing without two of its top four receivers, two secondary starters, two defensive front seven starters and both of its primary backup running backs. Plus, there are more players injured and hobbling despite the off week.
Gunner Stockton is not turnover-prone like Carson Beck, and his dual-threat ability should keep the Gators on edge. Lagway should continue his progression — don’t forget, Florida led 13-6 at halftime last year when he got knocked out for the game — but it was the defense that gave up 28 points in the second half once Georgia was able to make adjustments.
The Gators keeping up with the Dawgs the way Ole Miss (43-35) and Tennessee (44-41 in OT) did is unlikely, and Georgia still beat that former team by a TD. As such, UGA must be the play. And while it’s possible the Dawgs are able to make defensive improvements coming out of the off week, the Gators are still immensely thin in the secondary, creating the likelihood that 51 points or more are scored in this game for the fourth straight year and fifth time in six meetings.
2025 record: 5-2 ATS, 6-1 O/U
» Uniforms: Florida will wear its best combination of threads Saturday when it dons blue jerseys, blue pants and orange helmets against Georgia for the first time in this game since 2009. It is the first of two rivalry games this season in which the Gators will wear this combination.
