In what was likely a long-time coming, the son of former Florida Gators star quarterback Shane Matthews has decided to follow in his father’s footsteps. Luke Matthews (Gainesville, FL) announced that he will join Florida football next season.

The younger Matthews (5-foot-9, 162 pounds) will not be a scholarship athlete but rather a preferred walk-on for the Gators. He tweeted his commitment on Saturday along with a graphic of him dressed in a No. 9 jersey like the one his father wore.

Matthews has thrown for 47 touchdowns and 17 interceptions over the last two seasons for Gainesville High School with his father as offensive coordinator. He has started three straight years and also plays baseball.

Florida was Matthews’s top preferred walk-on offer by far.

The Gators have four-star QB Jalon Jones (Richmond, VA) committed as part of the Class of 2019 and do not have any other signal callers targeted for this recruiting cycle.
