Fast asleep in his home after a loss to Texas A&M in the middle of the season, Florida Gators kicker Eddy Pineiro woke to the screams of a woman. The brave actions that followed saved the woman “from possible severe injuries or even death,” according to the Gainesville Police Department.

Before 3 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 15, 2017, Pineiro heard a woman screaming for help outside of his apartment. She was “a victim of dating violence by her boyfriend” and had been “thrown to the ground, violently punched and choked.” When Pineiro looked outside his window and “witnessed the violent crime, without hesitation he yelled to his father” and the two immediately took off down “three flights of stairs and across the property to intervene.”

Once the Pineiros found the victim, her attacker had once again pounced on her. Pineiro “grab[bed] the attacker off” her, giving her an opportunity to flee from the violent situation. The attacker was later arrested and is now in jail for his crimes.

The GPD on Wednesday awarded Pineiro a “Police Service Award” for “contributions to law enforcement that improves the quality of life within the community,” an honor Pineiro shared Sunday via his Twitter account.

A redshirt junior, Pineiro decided to leave the Gators football program with a season of eligibility remaining. He hopes to be selected in the 2018 NFL Draft this spring but will almost certainly be on a professional roster next season.
