Florida college football recruiting: National Signing Day 2021 updates, early class rankings
Football

The Florida Gators on Wednesday completed one of the wildest National Signing Days the program’s experienced in quite some time as new head coach Billy Napier reeled in three significant commitments to help rebuild a Class of 2022 that had been decimated over the last few months. In doing so, he set a new course for the Gators and a new expectation level for recruiting at Florida.

With less than one week of recruiting and less than half of a coaching staff, Napier and his assistants hauled in the No. 28, No. 64 and No. 251 players in the nation, according to the 247Sports Composite. In doing so, he boosted the Gators from 79th in the team rankings to 50th, though that number does not represent where UF will likely land in seven weeks when the traditional National Signing Day takes place in early February.

Four-star safety Devin Moore (Naples, FL) flips from Notre Dame to Florida.

Five-star defensive back Kamari Wilson (Fort Myers, FL) signs with Florida over Georgia.

Four-star linebacker Shemar James (Mobile, AL) rejoined Florida over Alabama, Georgia.

The Gators only had four on-field assistants hired at the start of the day and added a fifth in the middle of National Signing Day in wide receivers coach Keary Colbert, a six-year NFL veteran who was most recently in that position at USC. Even Napier’s recruiting staff was hardly pieced together with a number of moves still expected in the coming days, weeks and months.

Defensive coordinator Patrick Toney and cornerbacks coach Corey Raymond clearly had a significant influence on Florida’s close to the early portion of the cycle. As the rest of the staff gets added, the Gators will attack the transfer portal and remaining unsigned prospects in the Class of 2022 in an effort to build a strong roster for Napier’s first season.

Florida fans should most certainly be thrilled with what went down Wednesday and what it appears is likely to come for the Gators.
