Denzel Aberdeen wins temporary injunction to play with Florida Gators during 2026-27 season

It has certainly not been an easy journey since guard Denzel Aberdeen decided to return to the Florida Gators with hopes of playing for the team during the 2026-27 college basketball season. Though Aberdeen recommitted in April and enrolled at Florida, his playing status has been up in the air amid a complex NCAA decision affecting hundreds of athletes nationwide.

Aberdeen, who completed four collegiate seasons but only played 41 total minutes over 12 games as a true freshman, filed a temporary injunction against the NCAA for a stay of participation that would effectively result in a fifth season of eligibility.

He won a temporary stay in a Florida circuit court on Tuesday, clearing him to play for the Gators this season, though the NCAA will likely try to appeal the ruling, and the case may continue to go back and forth for months. Ultimately, it is expected that Aberdeen and UF will receive full clearance.

The goal is to have Aberdeen covered by the NCAA’s new 5-for-5 rule, which allows college athletes to play up to five seasons within five years of collegiate eligibility. As a member of the Class of 2022, Aberdeen was not automatically grandfathered into the new rule.

Jesse Panuccio, Aberdeen’s attorney, noted that his client should not only fall under the rule but that barring him from competing was unfair given that he spent years competing in games against “fifth-, sixth- and sometimes seventh-year seniors who received Covid-era eligibility waivers.”

Many Class of 2022 athletes nationwide have won similar injunctions to the one awarded to Aberdeen on Tuesday. This comes on the back of the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals granting a stay in a prior U.S. District Court decision out of Colorado that granted such athletes an extra year of eligibility, whether the NCAA liked it or not.

Florida head coach Todd Golden, who regularly offered his support for Aberdeen, praised the decision.

“We’re pleased with today’s ruling, and we’re especially happy for Denzel,” he said in a statement.

Aberdeen, who spent his first three collegiate seasons at UF, completed his senior campaign at Kentucky, averaging career-highs in points (13.5), assists (3.4), rebounds (2.5), 3-point shooting (36.3%), free-throw shooting (79.8%) and minutes per game (30.6%) in his first year as a starter.

Upon his departure from the Gators, it was said that Aberdeen received a better NIL package from the Wildcats. Florida ultimately signed Boogie Fland and Xaivian Lee from the transfer portal; while Fland is returning to the Gators, Lee was believed to have exhausted his eligibility following three seasons at Princeton. However, due to the 5-for-5 rule, Lee returned to college two weeks ago and transferred to Gonzaga.

Aberdeen is expected to start alongside Fland, giving Florida one of the top backcourts in the SEC to go along with the league’s best frontcourt by margin. The Gators are expected to be the preseason No. 1 team in the nation, seeking their second national championship in three seasons.
