While the Florida Gators continue to wait and see how their Class of 2022 will shape up, the program added a top-tier high school juniors to its future depth chart on Tuesday. Head coach Dan Mullen landed a big fish right out of the gate as four-star 2023 tight-end Mac Markway (St. Louis, MO) committed to Florida over a bevy of offers.

Markway (6-foot-4, 250 pounds) may be the next in a long line of successful Gators tight ends. Rated as the No. 93 overall player in the 247Sports Composite, he chose Florida over Alabama, LSU, Notre Dame, Ohio State and others.

With tremendous size and pass-catching ability, Markway saw a kindred spirit in UF tight ends coach Tim Brewster, who has been charged with developing some of the NFL’s top players at that position. Markway should have an opportunity to play from the jump as long as he earns it on the field.

The nation’s fourth-ranked tight end was the Gators’ top target at the position. Now he’s the first member of Florida’s 2023 class.

As for that 2022 class? Well, the Gators are 34th in the 247Sports Composite team rankings with only one top-100 commitment. Many of Florida’s top targets have yet to commit and may be making decisions soon, but that doesn’t change the fact that UF has a lot of work to do simply to end up in a respectable spot by December.
