Florida is the choice for safety Marcus Maye

Long favoring the Florida Gators, four-star safety Marcus Maye (Melbourne, FL) made his decision final on Monday, announcing that he is the newest member of the team’s 2012 recruiting class.

Considered the No. 7 safety in the country by Rivals, Maye pushed aside overtures from Florida State to accept Florida’s scholarship offer. The No. 13-ranked safety according to ESPNU, he is the second player at his position to commit to the Gators in the last four days. Three-star Rhaheim Ledbetter (Boiling Springs, NC) gave his pledge to Florida on Friday.

A big fan of head coach Will Muschamp and defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson, Maye believes that being a member of the new regime’s first full recruiting class with the Gators will give him the best chance to succeed in the long run.

“Coach Muschamp is a defensive guy and Coach Robinson is an energetic coach which I like,” he said. “He’ll make me the best player I can be so I’m excited about Gainesville.”

He visited the University of Florida on Monday and was accompanied by his mother, other members of his family and his high school coach.

Florida now boasts a 15-player 2012 class and have commitments from a total of four defensive backs. The Gators hope to add to their bounty at the conclusion of the Friday Night Lights showcase at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium on July 22.

the video kinda makes me wonder why he’s not an offensive recruit tbh. looks like he could get in some big hits at safety though

Very proud of Marcus right now!!! Not that im a Big Time Gator Fan but he is the right fit for the Gators. I knew back in youth league at West Melbourne Football that Marcus had a great head on his shoulders well respected and a great young man. He made everytime he hit the field count and I know he will take his pride n game to the next level for Coach Muschamp and The Gators!!! Way to go Marcus Maye Coach Durand is Proud of You!!!

I’m hearing we’re the leader for Howard! Our secondary will be lockdown if we can land him.

  14. Timmy T says:

Followed this kid from afar for a while now. From what little I’ve gathered, seems like a very bright kid with STUPID athletic skills to go along with his stature, which is stout. Perfect pick-up in my opinion. Hopefully, he becomes a recruiting freak from now until signing day, too.

  15. Ken (CA) says:

Adam, who are the big possiblities that will be at FNL this weekend? Or will you be doing an article on it later in the week?

This is why the Sec is the Sec. We take the best ath and put them on d. Of course he looks good with the ball in his hands, I’m sure he is the best player on his team. If you look most of our secondary played some o, like someone said elam was the number ath in the nation, evans was a really good rb up in jersy. And if I’m not mistaken I think valdez showers had over 2,000 rushing yds in hs. But you put him at corner he could neutralize the opposing teams best player. BOOM!

    Great pick up!

  18. nnivea says:

Just one of my pet peeves, but saw a lot of hitting on his part, but few wrap-ups. In the SEC, there’s going to be receivers who need to be TACKLED, not just hit.

Another great pick-up by Muschamp. UF’s seconday is going to be sick in the upcoming years. Muschamp’s plan of recruiting good football players and putting them in the best positions and situations to succeed, projects to be a strategy. Depth in the SEC is very important because of the physicality of this league and week to week injuries of key players. If we can land a few more beast defensive tackles, our 2012 recruiting class will definitely be top 5. Also would like to see us get another wide reciever. Hopefully we’ll land one after Friday Night Lights

  20. Jesse C says:

Although I am excited about another steller athlete making the pledge to my beloved gators, I can’t help but wonder where all these secondary players are going to line up. We signed 6 last year, we already have 4 this year and if we get Howard we will be overloaded and those positions. Since Tavares is doing such an awesome job recruiting, maybe we should have him help out in getting us some guys in positions of need like WR, DE, DT and LB.

  21. Sorry for the delay in approving these last five comments. I’ve been busy dealing with OGGOA T-shirt issues.
