The Florida Gators suffered a big blow on the recruiting trail Friday night as four-star cornerback Clinton Burton Jr. (Baltimore, MD) blipped to Boston College. This just eight days after Burton announced he was shutting down his recruitment entirely to play for the Gators.

Burton (5-foot-11, 170 pounds) was the second-highest rated commitment in Florida’s Class of 2021 at No. 176 overall in the 247Sports Composite. Just one week after telling 247Sports he was “tired of the recruiting process” and appreciated the Gators showing him loyalty, Burton has seemingly changed his mind on a dime.

In a video posted to his social media accounts, Burton shows a text message conversation with a Florida logo saying he’s ready to shock the world, only to later be seen wearing a Boston College polo with a “committed” graphic on the screen.

Florida’s class remains at 10th nationally and fourth in the SEC despite the decommitment. Burton is now Boston College’s only four-star prospect with its next-best player ranked No. 502 overall.

The Gators added verbal commitments from three 2021 defensive backs last month, including four-star Kamar Wilcoxson (Bradenton, FL), three-star Dakota Mitchell (Winter Park, FL) and three-star Jordan Young (Tampa, FL).

Florida now has 17 underclassmen commitments (nine four-stars, eight three-stars) as part of its Class of 2021, which was ranked as high as seventh nationally this summer. The Gators are also counting a pair of former commitments now in junior college — linebacker Diwun Black and guard Deyavie Hammond — as part of their class, giving them 19 overall for this cycle. Black is ranked as the No. 1 overall JUCO player in the nation, per 247Sports.
