Sophomore forward Devin Robinson‘s return to the Florida Gators was made official on Tuesday, though it did not come under the best circumstances.

Robinson, who entered his name into the 2016 NBA Draft for evaluation purposes, had his plans changed when medical tests revealed a stress fracture in his left foot. He underwent surgery last week and will be sidelined for 4-6 months, according to the program.

As Robinson was unable to work out for NBA scouts, coaches and front-office executives, any evaluation of his abilities would have been based solely on his game tape, and teams would have been unlikely to consider him draftable due to his injury. Considering Robinson career to this point has been good but not great (45.8 percent shooting, 9.0 points and 5.6 rebounds in 23.1 minutes per game in 2015-16) and he is still developing, it made all the sense in the world for him to return to school for at least one more year.

A podiatrist experienced in treating stress fractures that occur in athletes – particularly basketball players – told OnlyGators.com that the six-month estimate for Robinson is the most accurate; however, a return could take longer depending how the fracture heals. For this reason, Robinson’s availability for the 2016-17 season cannot be assumed.

Still, he would be an important piece for a Gators team that is looking to return to the NCAA Tournament following a two-year absence, especially with Dorian Finney-Smith departing due to graduation.

Let’s take a look at how Florida basketball’s roster stacks up at this time (classes represent the player’s designation for 2016-17, players who will see major minutes listed).
