OGGOA has learned that three former Florida Gators players have been officially invited to participate in the 2012 NFL Scouting Combine (National Invitational Camp) at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, IN.

The event, which is held for six days from Feb. 22-28, consists of more than 300 players being put through a series of drills, tests and interviews while more than 600 NFL personnel in attendance (including coaching staffs, executives, player personnel and medical staffs) look on and evaluate each of them. It amounts to the final job interview these athletes will participate in before the 2012 NFL Draft commences on April 26.

The three former Gators student-athletes invited to the combine include:

Running back Jeff Demps – Group: 6; Camp: RB06
Defensive tackle Jaye Howard – Group: 7; Camp: DL22
Running back Chris Rainey – Group: 6; Camp: RB24

Former Florida cornerback Janoris Jenkins (Group: TBD; Camp: DB27) was also invited and is expected to participate in the event.

Demps, on the other hand, is unlikely to take part in the combine as he has decided to run track for the Gators and attempt to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics.

The two notable names left off the invite list are those of quarterback John Brantley and wide receiver Deonte Thompson. Other draft-eligible Florida players include center/guard Dan Wenger and defensive end William Green.

  1. wgator40 says:

wow bad break for JB and Deonte. its really hard to catch on with an NFL team without even going to the combine.

  2. Drew says:

I wonder how long it will be before the Brantley family try to pressure the NFL to extend an invite to ole’ Johnny? Worked at Florida, why not at the combine?

  3. Gatorman says:

I don’t mean to be mean….but, DT can’t really be surprised. Very forgettable player

    • Drew says:

This isn’t politics, you aren’t being mean for speaking honestly. DT was horrible. If he’s surprised he didn’t get an invite, there’s really no hop for him because he lives in an alternate world.

  4. Daniel M. says:

Surely nobody will look at Rainey as a RB in the NFL. I’m thinking maybe catch on somewhere as a punt returner? Am I missing something here?

And on a completely different note, Adam Lane looks much more impressive to me than Kelvin Taylor does.

  5. ncgator says:

Brantley can’t run or throw and thompson can’t catch……wonder why they didn’t get invites.

  6. wgator40 says:

i think its a shame for both because they would have both tested well. The combine is a meat market and DT would have ran well and Brantley would have thrown well with no pass rush. This was their only real shot to show up in the 6-7th round but i dont think it will happen for either of em

  7. G8r4life says:

If DT and Brantley perform well at the Gators pro day, they will get a shot. Players still get drafted or signed after the draft, even if they weren’t at the combine. If either of them have the talent to contribute in the NFL, the scouts will find them. I could see both players ending up on a practice squad for an NFL team. But most likely will end up in the Canadian or Arena league if they want to continue playing football for a living. GO GATORS!!!!

  8. Agree says:

I agree too with NC gator !!!! i think thompson is destined to go to arena league and brantley can go coach high school ball
