SIX BITS: Muschamp, Young, Valentine, Tebow

1 » It appears as if Florida Gators head coach Will Muschamp and members of his coaching staff recently met with Luther Campbell, the former frontman of 2 Live Crew known as Uncle Luke. Campbell, who has a strong and long-time association with the Miami Hurricanes, is a known pornographer, hosts a Miami radio show, writes a column for the Miami New Times and recently ran for mayor of Miami-Dade County. He is also the defensive coordinator at Miami Northwestern High School.

2 » Could Florida defensive line coach Bryant Young be on his way to the Seattle Seahawks to join defensive coordinator Dan Quinn? It is all speculation at this point, but Seattle did just lose defensive line coach Todd Wash to Jacksonville and Quinn may very well wish to bring Young along for the ride and his first NFL coaching job. The Gators recently hired Brad Lawing as assistant head coach and defensive line coach (with a focus on the defensive ends) rather than promoting Young from assistant defensive line coach (with a focus on defensive tackles) to the full role. Young has received overwhelmingly positive reviews as a coach and recruiter over his two years at Florida. He is not yet signed for 2013 but is on a one-year renewable contract.

3 » In his Tuesday Truths column on Basketball Prospectus, John Gasaway continued his praise of Gators basketball, noting that the team has “opened the SEC season by playing about as well as the sport permits.” He continues to say that Florida “has been one of the nation’s best defenses all season long” and is built to succeed even if its perimeter shooting dips for a few games because of the talent of senior forward Erik Murphy and junior center Patric Young in the post. As Gasaway notes, the duo are shooting 62 percent on two-point shots this season.

4 » Four-star 2014 defensive tackle Travonte Valentine, who committed to the Gators on July 29, 2012 and is one of four pledges for the next recruiting cycle, is reportedly wavering on his status and may very well open up his recruitment sooner than later. “i havent been feeling my decision lately [still going to] sleep on n rest on it give it some time i just dont know,” he wrote on his Twitter account on Monday. Valentine has seemingly been going back-and-forth about his commitment for weeks, so his comments do not come as much of a surprise with a year to go until his National Signing Day.

5 » ESPN analyst Mark Schlereth certainly sounded doubtful Tuesday that quarterback Tim Tebow has the talent or athletic ability to transition to another position if needed in order to continue his NFL career. Caught candidly speaking to Hannah Storm during ESPN‘s coverage of Super Bowl Media Day, Schlereth discussed his honest opinion about Tebow based on information that was apparently relayed to him by Denver Broncos coaches. “…like a tight end, H-back. I would tell you, I talked to a bunch of the Broncos coaches and they’re like [Winces], ‘I just don’t know if he’s a fluid enough athlete to go over and play tight end.’ He doesn’t catch the ball naturally either.” Kudos to Deadspin for catching the blunder and capturing the video.

6 » It appears as if Florida has a replacement in line at Wildcat quarterback once junior running back Trey Burton graduates in 2013. Four-star wide receiver commitment Alvin Baley (Seffner, FL) told The Gainesville Sun this week that the coaching staff sees him as Burton’s heir apparent when the time comes. “They want me to be a versatile guy that can make plays in the slot, whether it be catching passes across the middle or running the jet sweep,” he said. “But they also want me to be a Wildcat quarterback and take over after Trey Burton leaves. I think I can do real good in that role because of my experience, so I’m looking forward to it.” Bailey played quarterback for Armwood High School.

  1. Alex says:

If a 2014 recruit wants to decommit, now’s the time.

  2. Ken (CA) says:

Any rumors as to why Coaching staff met with Luther Cambell? His profile surely doesn’t fit into the “Florida Way”, although I suppose he could make recruiting Miami/Dade area easier with his connections

    • calgator says:

Coaches are out visiting schools and prospects right now. He’s the DC at Miami NW.

      • Ken (CA) says:

ah, i thought still in the quiet period, but sounded like went to see Cambell specifically, not a recruit, and with possible DL coach leaving ……

        • calgator says:

I am only speculating. I read that coaches have been in CA and FL this week visiting schools. Or maybe he was a big 2 Live fan growing up…

  3. Walt P says:

Glad Will prepared for if Young does leave. Then if the coaches visit Coach Campbell I’m sure it’s for recruiting proposes. Tim can’t catch a break.

  4. T. Robins says:

Hahaha that’s lame to call that man out for being a pornographer. What does that have to do with football?

    • VO2max says:

So you’d be okay with a pornographer guiding your son as his coach? With people who have an actual moral compass the answer is a resounding no. Luther is one strange bird. He’s an example of being able to buy your way in.

      • MAR says:

I don’t know much about Luther other than I saw 2 Live Crew in concert as a teenager and will never forget it. Never saw so much booty. However, if he is a good coach (not saying that he is because I have no idea), I don’t care what he does with his personal life as long as it is not illegal and it stays in his personal life.
