Ohio State linebacker Teradja Mitchell, the No. 44 overall prospect in the Class of 2018, has committed to join the Florida Gators out of the transfer portal. He is expected to enroll this semester and participate in spring practice entering his sixth and final collegiate season.

“100% COMMITTED,” he wrote on Twitter. “Gator Nation, you will get my very all. Let’s work.”

Mitchell (6-foot-2, 239 pounds) was a four-star prospect out of high school who has not yet been rerated as a transfer. He has spent the last five seasons with the Buckeyes, playing 39 games over the last four with eight starts in 2021 when he was a co-captain.

Pushed out of his starting job ahead of the 2022 season, Mitchell ended up suffering a hamstring injury early in the campaign that led to him seeing limited action in just four games. As such, he was able to take a redshirt, preserving his fifth year of eligibility granted from the COVID-19 pandemic.

In his year as a frequent starter, Mitchell amassed 45 tackles (4.5 for loss). While he has yet to live up to expectations once had for him, he has excelled in the classroom and as a locker room leader. Despite entering the transfer portal, Mitchell chose to remain with Ohio State to help with preparation for the College Football Playoff.

“He’s about a fine a person as you’re ever going to be around,” said Buckeyes defensive coordinator Jim Knowles, according to the Columbus Dispatch. “He’s a team guy. He’s put a lot time and effort into this program. The way he’s handled things is rare. But that’s just the kind of person he is. He’s someone you’re going to be able to count on to be there.”

Head coach Billy Napier has generally put a premium on targeting transfers with multiple years of eligibility remaining, but Mitchell was clearly an exception given his potential and the Gators’ immediate needs at the position.

. Though Jackson has already played three seasons, he has two years of eligibility left and will join Florida in 2023 for his redshirt junior season.

Mitchell is the fourth transfer Florida have acquired this offseason along with newly graded four-star defensive end Caleb Banks (Louisville) and three-star quarterback Graham Mertz (Wisconsin) as well as defensive tackle Cam’Ron Jackson (Memphis), who has yet to be regraded by 247Sports.
