Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Charlie Weis has been offered the same position with the Florida Gators and is expected to accept the job, according to various reports including one from ESPN’s Chris Mortensen.
Weis, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish head coach from 2005-09, is known for his extensive offensive success in the NFL and would be a huge get for Florida.
Mortensen reports that new Gators head coach Will Muschamp contacted the Chiefs earlier this week in order to ask permission to speak with Weis about the job. Muschamp expressed a strong desire to hire a prominent offensive coordinator with professional experience in his introductory press conference with Florida.
Beginning his career as an offensive assistant with the New York Giants under head coach Bill Parcells, Weis was a position coach until 1997 when he was hired as the New York Jets offensive coordinator. He held that job with the Jets and later the New England Patriots until 2004 when he left for Notre Dame.
Kansas City head coach Todd Haley, who hired Weis last year after he was fired from Notre Dame, said he was “unaware of anything” in regards to Weis leaving, saying “It would be news to me.”
Muschamp said he would not be hiring any assistant coaches until the conclusion of the 2011 Outback Bowl, a statement upheld by athletic director Jeremy Foley earlier this week. The Chiefs will be playing their final regular season game on Sunday before advancing to the playoffs.
Kansas City boast the NFL’s ninth-ranked offense.

No no no. He failed in college (so what if he has done well
in the NFL). He is an awful personality. Why would we wnat him and
his gunt on our sidelines?
I’m down. He looks like a darn good OC. What’re your
thoughts Adam?
Can’t really see ‘ol front butt as a gator, but he does
know how to coach up an offense.
Here is a surprising tidbit – while the Cheifs are #1 in
rushing yards per game, they are 28th in passing yards. I always
thought he was a pass heavy offense guy.

Will give you guys my thoughts later. In the car on the way to Tampa.
I will try and have an open mind. He has gotten some street
cred for offenses but in college he was also notorious for not
developing his players. Welcome Charlie and your FUPA. I hope we
can get some smooth orange and blue polyester pants to cover up
your junk.
I think he would be a huge pick up for us. He will attract
blue chip recruits and knows how to run an offense. His pass
offense at KC sucks bc they have a qb that is highly overrated and
not much around him either. I think between him and Steve A there
is nobody that would rather have the latter runing the offense.
Plus, I think the Florida heat will be good for him and maybe he
will drop a few lbs. Maybe we can get Jack Del Rio as the DC…but
he has a job you say???maybe not after Sunday.
would be interesting. He sure can coach an offense and his
resume speaks for itself. Those who said he failed at ND, that was
as HC but the offense at ND was still pretty solid. Bring that
style, and UF players 😀 with Coach Muschamp running the ship and
our defense will be solid. Should be good to go.
Think it would be an awesome hire. Great reputation as OC
and would love to have him upstairs calling plays. Think recruits
would love NFL ties and experience too. Plus head coaching
experience would help our new HBC’s learning curve. Hope it
happens!
I would definitely like this hire. This man has proven
himself to be a very good OC.
This would be a fantastic hire. Sure we would need to beef
up our pre-game buffet’s but this guy can flat out run an offense.
Not so much a team but definitely an offense. He can also recruit
with the best of them. A little too far over his head in South Bend
he was able to put together multiple top 10 recruiting classes. He
definitely doesn’t bring the sexy but I like his style on
O.
I’m not really sure what to think but I will say that for
all ND’s faults when he was running things, a lack of an offense
was never one of them.
Who cares how much he weighs, guy is a proven winner, and
he knows offense. This will get our recruiting going and our o will
be awesome, best news i have heard in months. Cant wait for him to
get on campus.
Woah, we’re going to sport a varied and multiple defense and a pro style run first offense next year? This is a whole lot of change to take in. It feels like University of Alabama – Gainesville campus. It will take a while to wrap my head around all this. I can’t say it won’t work, but it will be very different.
His offenses at ND were very successful and with watered down talent. He didn’t know how to run a program was the problem, but as far as an architect of offensive game planning this would be a huge get for us.
I’m curious as to his motivation for returning to the collegiate level. Seems like he’s got a pretty good gig at KC and this seems to be a step back! That being said, he can recruit and will definitly be an attraction for those recruits who have the talent and aspirations to play at the next level. Knowing he will run a pro-style offense should also go a long way in attracting a premier running back who ordinarily wouldn’t be interested in playing for Florida in a spread. He’s not the most likeable guy and he’s somewhat of a slob, but then again I don’t have to eat with him. I sure as hell wouldn’t want this guy as a head coach, but as an OC this guy know’s his X’s and O’s and that’s all that really counts.
PEAR BRYANT!
I know several people in the ND athletic department and
South Bend community very well. Their quotes are that Charlie Weis
is not a very nice man and treated students, town residents,
alumni, boosters, … terribly. There are hundreds of stories about
his poor interpersonal communication skills and mistreatment of
people at ND. I have to think this would be a terrible mistake. Now
he is having trouble getting along with his Head Coach at the
Chiefs, which is no surprise. Cutliffe left ND after a few months
of working with Charlie.
I am concerned about how well he will recruit. He doesn’t
have the most sterling reputation in the college ranks and had a
huge ego while at ND. Not to mention his best offenses only came
during the video cheating at New England.
Coach in weighting!
OH HELLL YES!!!!!! Let’s hope it’s more than just a rumor!
Probably only going to be a two year guy, but so what. Let’s get
this thing started off right. Make all the fat jokes you want, he’s
a millionaire that can really coach offense. Chicks dig
Millionaires LOL…
Two words…blue chippers love coaches that can help them
get ready for the pros…ok that was more than two words but this
guy would be a great get…of course ND is going to bad mouth
him…he didn’t succeed there. Doesn’t mean he doesn’t know
offense! He needs to park his ass up in the box and bring our
offensive guns out.
Bothers me about people skills but as an OC that’s
Muschamps concern. He’s probably a dick . Most coaches are but all
I care a out is his vertical attack. I am sure there was a
personality issue between Weiss and Hailey. If he starts that BS
with Will send him on the road.as long as he relates and teaches
are players he can be a dick.
No, no, no. He did not fail in college. The defense for the
Irish failed in college. I think it would be a great hire
considering the type offense Coach Muschamp desires. I totally
trust Muschamp to make the right decision especially when he gets
the advice of the New England Pats coach. Good job! Now what’s up
on the defensive side? Go Gators!
Defense is supposed to be Dan Quinn, DL coach from Seattle.
Not a huge fan of Weiss but maybe?? Think it will be boom or bust,
just like Mushchamp.
