Losing a handful of EDGE rushers to the transfer portal had the Florida Gators searching for substantial depth early in the process. Head coach Billy Napier took his first step toward shoring up that position Sunday when Kofi Asare announced that he will play for the Gators next season.
Asare (6-foot-5, 250 pounds) registered 23 tackles (10 solo, 5.5 for loss) and three sacks for the Minutemen last season. He also forced and recovered a fumble. The redshirt sophomore will have two seasons of eligibility remaining once he steps foot on campus.
Among the other schools that offered Asare were Iowa State, Michigan State, Mississippi State and Missouri. He was originally a three-star prospect out of high school but has yet to be rated as a transfer.
Asare will look to step in for Justus Boone (Arkansas), Jack Pyburn (LSU), T.J. Searcy and Quincy Ivory (Jacksonville State), all of whom entered the portal seeking opportunities at other programs.
