Florida football recruiting: Four-star DB Trey Dean commits, signs with the Gators

In a second major get for the Florida Gators on Wednesday, four-star defensive back Trey Dean (Hampton, GA) committed to head coach Dan Mullen during the first-ever early period for 2018 National Signing Day.

Dean (6-foot-2, 180 pounds) is the 250th ranked player in the nation per the 247Sports Composite and a candidate to play right away for the Gators due to his versatility. He is said to be capable of playing throughout the secondary, and he may even be a gunner for Florida on special teams right out of the gate.

Corralling Dean despite only being at UF for a few weeks, Mullen secured his second major addition to his Class of 2018. Four-star quarterback Emory Jones (Franklin, GA) signed with the Gators earlier on Wednesday. Jones, rated No. 40 nationally, is a dual-threat passer who chose Florida over Florida State and Alabama after previously having been committed to Ohio State.

With Jones and Dean in tow, the Gators jumped from No. 32 a couple days ago to No. 14 in the new 247Sports Composite team rankings. That should be considered a massive win for Mullen, who is still playing catch-up to the rest of the nation’s top programs after Florida saw a number of top-tier defections following the departure of Jim McElwain.

The momentum the Gators have now will surely help them over the next two months as Florida attempts to wrangle back some former commitments and make its intentions known toward still-available prospects. Four-star wide receiver Jacob Copeland (Pensacola, FL) is an example of a former UF commitment who rescinded his pledge but is now very much in play for Florida even as Alabama presses for his signature in February.

Dean also happens to be cousins with former Gators safety Ahmad Black, who is on staff as a graduate assistant.

    Welcome to UF, Trey!

I didn’t know Ahmad Black was on the staff. That is great to hear, I loved him as a Gator and as a Buc so I’m pretty happy to hear he is coaching here.
