With the Florida Gators set to host Tennessee on Saturday, the future got a bit brighter as 2023 wide receiver Darren Lawrence (Sanford, FL) verbally committed to the program. In doing so, he became the fourth member of a Class of 2023 that is notable for its playmaking talent.

Lawrence (6-foot-2, 190 pounds) committed nearly three months to the day after being offered by Florida. He visited UF for last week’s game against Alabama and is back in town to see UT on Saturday. He is currently listed as a three-star prospect by 247Sports’ internal rankings, and though his offer list is not overly stout, it does include the likes of Miami, Michigan State and Ole Miss.

Passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach Billy Gonzales ensured Lawrence was a part of this class.

Though his commitment did not move the needle in terms of the Gators’ class ranking, Florida is the No. 6 team in the 247Sports Composite rankings for 2023. It already has a pair of four-star offensive playmakers in tow as well as a three-star defensive back who is expected to move up recruiting boards during his junior year.

The Gators are still a bit behind building their Class of 2022, though progress has been made. Florida sits 12th nationally and fifth in the SEC, though it boasts just one top-100 prospect at this time.
