Coming off what was nearly one of the worst losses in program history but was instead a nail-biter of a victory, the Florida Gators slid for the second straight week in the college football rankings, taking steps back in both the AP Top 25 and Coaches Poll. Florida’s 31-28 win over South Florida did not engender positive reactions for a program that is still figuring itself out in Year 1 under head coach Billy Napier.

The Gators dropped two spots in the AP Top 25 to sit at No. 20, though that’s still 18 slots higher than it stood when it entered the season as the 38th overall team receiving votes. Florida also slid one spot to No. 22 in the Coaches Poll where it has been more consistently ranked all season; that is also 15 places higher than it was entering the season as the 37th overall team receiving votes.

Unfortunately for UF, its road only gets more difficult from here. In fact, Florida will face its third top 25 opponent in four weeks this Saturday when it visits Tennessee at Neyland Stadium, which will also host ESPN’s “College GameDay”. The Volunteers moved up four spots in both the AP Top 25 and Coaches Poll. They now sit as the No. 11/12 team in the nation before welcoming the Gators this coming weekend.

Florida already has a win this season over No. 13/14 Utah with a loss to No. 8/9 Kentucky.

Georgia usurped Alabama for the No. 1 spot in the AP Top 25 last week, but the Bulldogs also passed the Crimson Tide for the top slot in the Coaches Poll this week. UGA is now receiving 99 of 127 first-place votes. Ohio State, Michigan and Clemson round out the top five in both sets of rankings.
