TWO BITS: Shipman to UCF, Meyer wakeboarding

1 » Former Florida Gators guard Ray Shipman told UCFSports.com on Sunday that he will be transferring to play football for the Central Florida Knights. It came out a few weeks ago that Shipman had decided to change sports; now it is a done deal. “It’s something I’ve been thinking about ever since I stopped playing football after my freshman year of high school,” Shipman told the site. “Everybody in football was real surprised that I stopped. Now I want to go back to it. People think it’s just me changing sports, but to me I’m going back to my first love.” His cousin, quarterback Jeffrey Godfrey, plays at UCF which, ironically, just hired former Florida assistant Donnie Jones as its new head basketball coach. Shipman plans to play safety for the Knights and has yet to speak to Jones about any interest in basketball.

2 » Head coach Urban Meyer has been trying to relax and spend more time with his family this offseason, and what better way is there to do that than wakeboarding? In a promotional spot for Nautique, a boat manufacturer, Meyer is shown steering the boat while his daughter Gigi and some professionals tear up Lake Santa Fe. Enjoy.

So let me get this straight, Shipman hasn’t played football in 4 years, UCF probably has zero football tape on him and already offered him a safety spot? What a pathetic program. They wonder why they will never make anything of their program.

Mr.2Bits, we locals who could care less about the Golden Knights say that UCF stands for “U-Can’t-Finish”. We need to keep reminding their fans about that and shutting them out in The Swamp 42-0 back in ’06 when they start throwing smack at those of us who are Orlando-area Gator fans. Lest they forget, they have none other than George O’Leary as their head coach, who as many of us know was caught with something questionable on his resume when he was originally hired for the Notre Dame vacancy left by Bob Davie.

O-town, that was a great game. It was like UCF fans had never seen a real team play. Then they got their asses beat and canceled the series. I expect much of the same with the USF bandwaggoners this year. Living in Tampa the USF smack talk about how great they are is nauseating. Reality will hurt come 9/11

As a UCF student and a Gator fan for 18 years, I look forward to seeing what he can do come football season as a Knight.
