It was another successful week in a series of them for the Florida Gators baseball and softball teams. While the programs faced different results in Sunday games, they are nevertheless well-positioned as the postseason continues.

No. 14 Florida softball advanced to the 2022 Women’s College World Series with a tremendous 12-0 run-ruled victory over the No. 3 Virginia Tech Hokies on Sunday in the Blacksburg Super Regional. After dropping the opener, UF won consecutive games over VT by a combined 19-2, capturing a Super Regional on the road for the first time in program history.

The Gators, now 12-4 in their last 16 games, are playing in the WCWS for the first time since 2019 and 11th time in the last 14 seasons. They have never entered the WCWS with a higher ranking but are nevertheless aiming to play in the championship series for the first time since 2017 and win their first national championship since 2015.

Florida baseball ultimately fell short in the 2022 SEC Tournament after a rousing week of play. The Gators, on a hot streak of their own, lost the tournament’s second game in embarrassing fashion, a 10-0 run-ruled defeat at the hands of No. 5 Texas A&M. Florida rallied to beat No. 13 Arkansas (7-5) and Alabama (11-6) before extracting revenge with a 9-0 win over Texas A&M to survive three straight elimination games. UF cooled off, though, trailing 7-0 before falling 8-5 to No. 1 Tennessee in the championship game.

Though the Gators entered the SEC Tournament winning 11 of their prior 14 games, they were unranked nationally and unlikely to host a regional in the 2022 NCAA Tournament. After playing their way into the title game and improving to 16-5 in their last 21 contests, it’s highly likely that Florida will host the Gainesville Regional to open national postseason play.

Seedings will be announced on Monday at noon ET on ESPN2. The Gators will be playing in the 14th straight NCAA Tournament looking to come out of regional play for the first time since 2018.
