Former Florida Gators running back Tony Waters was shot and killed in his hometown of Sarasota, FL on Friday morning. He was 54.
According to the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, Waters’s 28-year-old stepson has been charged in his death after admitting he was responsible to police during a 911 call at 4 a.m.
Waters, who committed to Florida over Florida State, only saw the field with the Gators during the 1978 season, rushing for 73 yards in 26 carries over 11 games. He was often injured and did not see much playing time as UF went away from its wishbone running set.
“I’m just looking forward to running,” he told the Herald-Tribune on Dec. 20, 1975 when originally committing to Florida.
