Super Bowl 2020: Two Florida Gators active as Chiefs, 49ers battle for NFL title in Miami

Super Bowl LIV is upon us, and the Florida Gators will be well-represented at the game taking place in the outskirts of Miami, Florida, at Hard Rock Stadium. Two former Gators will suit up for Sunday night’s NFL championship game, one each on the AFC champion Kansas City Chiefs and NFC champion San Francisco 49ers.

Chiefs wide receiver Demarcus Robinson is in the midst of the best season of his young career. The 2016 fourth-round NFL Draft pick has hauled in 32 receptions for 449 yards and four touchdowns, averaging a career-best 14.0 yards per reception. Considering Robinson is not a top target for Kansas City, he has been excellent when given the opportunity and could be a secret weapon for the team to deploy on Sunday.

Former sixth-round pick Marcell Harris is in his second season with the 49ers. The team’s backup strong safety, he started seeing significant action beginning in Week 12 and made a difference for the league’s best defense. In a six-game span, Harris compiled 34 tackles (18 solo) with a QB hit, five pass defenses, two forced fumbles and one recovery. He has spent the playoffs seeing action solely on special teams, and it is unknown how significant of a role he will have in the Super Bowl.

San Francisco also has two other former Florida players on its roster in cornerback Teez Tabor and WR Chris Thompson, both of whom are on the team’s practice squad. It is not expected that either will dress or play in the big game.

No matter which team wins on Sunday, this will mark the 10th time in 12 seasons that a Gators player will win a Super Bowl ring. It is also the 18th consecutive year that Florida will have at least one former player in the game. Overall, UF has 33 Super Bowl rings won by 26 different players over 22 Super Bowls.
