With the Florida Gators looking to make a late push for a respectable class on National Signing Day, the program added a prospect it has been on for a while when three-star linebacker Nick Smith (Orlando, FL) committed to the team Saturday night.

Smith (6-foot-3, 210 pounds) chose Florida primarily over Michigan State and Louisville. The former NC State commitment also had offers from LSU and Oregon, among others.

“I’ve had my ups and downs with recruiting and I’m relieved that I’ve found a place I can call home for the next 4 years to continue my education and athletic career,” wrote Smith on his Twitter account. “I’ve built many relationships throughout this process but it’s time to shut it down and get ready for the next level. … I will be committing to THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA #ChompChomp #SWAMP17”

With Smith as part of the class, the Gators move from 31st to 28th in the 247Sports Composite team rankings. Florida with 15 has the third-fewest commitments among teams ahead of them and expect to add another handful of players — if not more — by National Signing Day on Wednesday.
