Florida Gators baseball falls to Virginia 5-4, gets eliminated from 2015 College World Series

By Andrew Olson – OnlyGators.com baseball writer

No. 4 Florida Gators (52-18) baseball saw its season come to an end on Saturday, one game shy of advancing to the 2015 College World Series Championship Series as the Virginia Cavaliers edged UF 5-4 in a drama-filled game with multiple ties and lead changes.

Virginia jumped out to a 1-0 lead, but Florida sophomore first baseman Peter Alonso (1/3, HR, 2 RBI, R, BB) answered with a 429-foot two-run homer in the second inning, breaking his own record for the longest home run hit in the history of TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Nebraska.

The Cavs tied the game at two in the fourth inning, but junior left fielder Harrison Bader (4/5, HR, RBI, R) put the Gators up 3-2 with a solo shot in the top of the fifth, as UF was marked as the visitor on Saturday. It was the last time Florida would hold a lead this season as Virginia fought back to go up 4-3 in the bottom frame and broke a 4-4 tie with multiple hits in the seventh.

The loss is a difficult one for the Gators, which have advanced to the CWS four times in the last six seasons but never come back to Gainesville with a national title.

Takeaways: Florida Gators baseball crushes Miami 15-3 in 2015 College World Series opener

By Andrew Olson – OnlyGators.com baseball writer

One down and four to go. An 11-run fourth inning carried No. 4 Florida Gators baseball (47-19) to a 15-3 blowout win over the No. 5 Miami Hurricanes in the opening round of the 2015 College World Series on Saturday in Omaha, Nebraska.

The 15 runs Florida scored set a new record for CWS games in TD Ameritrade Park, which has hosted the series since 2011.

The Gators big inning almost didn’t happen. In the bottom of the fourth, senior third baseman Josh Tobias (1/4, 3 RBI, 2 R) drew a lead off walk, and freshman catcher JJ Schwarz (2/4, 2 RBI, 2 R, BB) hit a chopper to Miami shortstop Brandon Lopez, who failed to field the ball cleanly and rushed his throw to first base. Instead of a double play to empty the bases, Florida had runners on second and third with nobody out, trailing 2-1. Fourteen additional UF batters came to the plate in the frame, and by time the UM recorded the third out, the Gators led 12-2.

No. 4 Florida Gators baseball routs Florida State on the way to 2015 College World Series

By Andrew Olson – OnlyGators.com baseball writer

For the first time since 2012, No. 4 Florida Gators baseball is going back to Omaha, Nebraska, after earning a spot in the 2015 College World Series on Saturday night. Florida (49-16) overcame an early two-run deficit to earn an 11-4 victory over the Florida State Seminoles at McKethan Stadium in Gainesville, Florida.

UF outscored FSU 24-9 over during the 2015 Gainesville Super Regionals, pulling off a 13-5 win on Friday night.

Freshman catcher JJ Schwarz (3/4, 2 HR, 3 RBI, 3 R) led the way on offense for the Gators with two deep blasts to left field. Schwarz, Florida’s rookie phenom, owns a new school record with 18 home runs during his freshman campaign. Schwarz has hit a blazing hot 22-for-39 (.564) in postseason play, going 12-for-20 (.600) in five 2015 NCAA Tournament games. If Schwarz can keep his hot streak up next week in Omaha, UF will be tough to beat.

This year’s berth marks Florida’s ninth trip to the College World Series, its fourth in eight seasons under head coach Kevin O’Sullivan (2010-12). UF will face No. 5 Miami in opening-round action; the Gators took two-of-three games from the Canes in Gainesville from Feb. 20-22.

Takeaways: No. 4 Florida Gators baseball routs Florida A&M 19-0 in Gainesville Regional opener

By Andrew Olson – OnlyGators.com baseball writer

No. 4 Florida Gators baseball wiped the floor with the Florida A&M Rattlers on Friday, using a 19-0 win to propel itself into the winner’s bracket of the Gainesville Regional portion of the 2015 NCAA Tournament.

Florida took a 1-0 lead in the second inning and never looked back with sophomore right-handed pitcher Logan Shore on the mound. Shore has been the victim of a lack of run support at times in the 2015 campaign, but the UF bats were plenty active Friday night at McKethan Stadium.

Eleven different Gators hitters recorded an RBI in Florida’s first NCAA Tournament win since June 10, 2012, snapping a six-game losing streak dating back to the 2012 College World Series.

Here are three takeaways from Florida’s blowout victory:

Florida Gators baseball wins SEC Tournament, earns No. 4 seed in 2015 NCAA Tournament

By Andrew Olson – OnlyGators.com baseball writer

No. 4 seed Florida Gators baseball (44-16) rebounded from an early loss to win four straight games and capture the 2015 SEC Tournament Championship. Florida defeated the No. 2 seed Vanderbilt Commodores 7-3 on Sunday in Hoover, Alabama, to clinch its seventh SEC Tournament title, first since 2011.

On Monday, the Gators were awarded the No. 4 overall seed in the 2015 NCAA Tournament. As such, Florida will host the Gainesville Regional and would host a Super Regional should it advance past the opening portion of the event. UF will host Florida Atlantic, South Florida and Florida A&M in regional play and would match up with the winner of the Tallahassee Regional (hosted by Florida State).

Takeaways: Florida Gators baseball blows a lead vs. Arkansas, puts national seed at risk

By Andrew Olson – OnlyGators.com baseball writer

The No. 5 seed Arkansas Razorbacks to score three runs in the top of the ninth inning to deliver a crushing 7-6 loss to the No. 4 seed Florida Gators (40-16), in the second round of the 2015 SEC Tournament in Hoover, Alabama, early Thursday morning.

Arkansas’ come-from-behind victory, which occurred past 1:30 a.m. local time, puts Florida’s chances of postseason success at serious risk. The Gators have been dumped into the loser’s bracket of the SEC Tournament – and consequently will play an elimination game less than 12 hours after their last completed – and may be at risk of losing the national seed they worked so hard for at the end of the regular season.

Here are three takeaways from the shocking early-morning loss:
