1 » Denver Broncos rookie quarterback Tim Tebow’s initial performance as a professional did little to sway his doubters – most notably former QB Joe Theismann and UCLA Bruins offensive coordinator Norm Chow. Theismann, who has been on Tebow’s case since before the 2010 NFL Draft, claims that many of his contemporaries were surprised to see the signal caller drafted I n the first round. “I would hope there isn’t anybody who would say Tim Tebow was going to come in and start for the Broncos this year,” Theismann said, according to The Denver Post. “It would have been too great an expectation for him. […] if you can’t refine his delivery, then he’s going to struggle to become a consistent quarterback. […] It’s long and low. Randall Cunningham had a long windup, but it was high. Tim’s is long and low. The ball is away from his body a long time.”

Chow agrees. “I don’t think Vince [Young] was ready because of where he came from. I don’t think Tebow is quite ready because of where he came from,” he said. “The intricacies of a pro passing game are unbelievable. It takes time. […] They said they were going to change his throwing style and that’s a bunch of bologna. You don’t change, in one summer, the throwing style a guy has been using for 20 years of his life.” Chow doesn’t even thing Tebow will survive as a running QB. “Tebow’s strength, obviously, is running the ball, and he’s not going to be able to do that in the NFL. We tried to do some of that stuff my first year with Vince, and he had a little success. But once teams figured it out – which in the NFL it usually takes them a half, or a quarter to figure things out – it wasn’t very effective anymore. All it’s going to do is you’re taking a lot of hits. And you’re not going to survive if you take a lot of hits in the NFL.”

Former NFL player and future hall of famer Deion Sanders was quite complementary when speaking about former Florida Gators quarterback Tim Tebow on Pardon the Interruptionn with Tony Kornheiser and Michael Wilbon on Thursday. Sanders, who was interviewed by the duo on location in Miami, FL, for Super Bowl XLIV, indicated that you have to evaluate Tebow based on his career instead of what a few scouts may think.

“In Pee Wee football – he succeeded. In high school football – he was a winner. In college football – not only was he a winner and National Champion…Heisman Trophy! [He was] always at the race. He’s a winner,” Sanders exclaimed. “How can you discount a winner in regards to anything? If he were playing you in a game of checkers, I might pick him.”

When questioned by Wilbon about the flack Tebow has received recently for his workouts at the 2010 Under Armour Senior Bowl, Sanders dismissed the critics. “They miss so much on the combine,” he continued. “They get a lot of it right, but it’s a lot of misses at the combine because it’s one guru who has a few credentials that says, ‘This guy has terrible mechanics.’ Well, who doesn’t? If you really look at a guy negatively…why don’t we start looking at what’s right about him instead of looking at what’s wrong with him?

At the start of the interview, Sanders was asked if he heard comments made about Tebow by former NFL quarterback Joe Theismann earlier in the day. In response, he scoffed and replied, “Did Joe say that for shock treatment?”

Sanders was an eight-time Pro Bowler, six-time First Team All-Pro selection, two-time Super Bowl Champion, NFL Defensive Player of the Year, two-time NFC Defensive Player of the Year and member of the NFL’s 1990s All-Decade team. With 53 career interceptions, he knows a thing or two about professional quarterbacks.

Former Washington Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann was interviewed in 1010XL of Jacksonville, FL, and made some inflammatory comments about former Florida Gators quarterback Tim Tebow and head coach Urban Meyer.

Theismann, according to Pro Football Talk, said Tebow should have retired after his senior season at Florida. “Rock star status preserved,” he said, while also saying that his mechanics are “poor” and that Tebow’s pride and ego are too great for him to retire before giving it a shot in the NFL.

“Obviously at Florida they don’t teach throwing the football,” Theismann continued. He added that Meyer and the Gators coaching staff has “no clue” how to prepare a quarterback to play “at the next level.”
