Spring football on a Friday night in Gainesville, Florida? That’s what the Florida Gators are reportedly considering as multiple outlets on Wednesday reported that the program is looking to hold the 2016 Orange & Blue Debut on Friday night, April 8.
According to the Associated Press and The Gainesville Sun, plans are not finalized at this time. The Sun notes that Florida will need approval from the Southeastern Conference in order to make the move.
The Gators’ spring game has been anything but in recent years. Due to a wide variety of issues, mostly injury problems and depth concerns, Florida has been unable to hold a legitimate spring game between two different teams for the last few seasons.
Fans have been unhappy, and consequently, attendance has been low for these events, which are supposed to be a way to get the base riled up ahead of the upcoming season.
Head coach Jim McElwain has been looking for ways to energize Gator Nation since taking over the program 13 months ago, and though some may have better things to do on Friday night, a Florida spring football game under the lights in Ben Hill Griffin Stadium would certainly be a unique and likely welcomed change.
