Todd Golden signs extension with Florida Gators, becoming highest-paid coach in program history

Though the Florida Gators did not soar to the same heights last season, Todd Golden once again proved himself as one of the top head basketball coaches in the sport through an up-and-down campaign. His performance earned him a six-year contract extension that not only retains him as the program leader but also makes him the highest-paid coach in program history.

Golden, 41, will remain one of the nation’s five highest-paid basketball coaches, receiving a bump up to an average total compensation of $8.25 million per season, according to the Orlando Sentinel, which reports that he will earn $7.5 million for the 2026-27 campaign.

Signing his third extension in as many seasons, Golden is now inked to Florida through the 2031-32 campaign on a six-year, $49.5 million contract that is 85% guaranteed. He will earn more year-to-year than head football coach Jon Sumrall, who is set to bring home $7.45 million in 2026, per contract details previously released by the University Athletic Association.

Potential bonuses Golden can add to his contracted salary include $100,000 for winning the SEC regular-season title, $50,000 for winning the SEC Tournament, $100,000 for appearing in the NCAA Tournament and $50,000 for each March Madness victory, per the Sentinel. He will earn $500,000 in longevity incentives with $300,000 annual raises.

Golden’s buyouts are substantial should he choose to leave Florida for another college team ($16 million in 2027, $13 million in 2028, dropping significantly from there), less so if he decides to try his hand at the NBA.

Golden is 103-41 (.715) in four seasons with the Gators, 50-22 (.694) in SEC play. Florida has advanced to the NCAA Tournament in three straight seasons, claiming conference titles and posting campaigns with fewer than 10 losses in consecutive years for the first time since 2013-14. Winning the program’s third national championship in 2025, its first since 2007, Golden became the youngest coach to win the NCAA Tournament since Jimmy Valvano in 1983.

The Gators are returning nearly their entire roster from last season, which disappointingly ended in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Senior forwards Thomas Haugh and Alex Condon, plus senior center Rueben Chinyelu, make up the most dynamic and experienced frontcourt in the nation. Junior guards Boogie Fland and Isaiah Brown are also back, as is redshirt senior AJ Brown. Former G Denzel Aberdeen, a member of the 2025 team, transferred back into UF but is fighting an eligibility battle, hoping to play with the Gators again this season.
