TWO BITS: soccer rolls, Newton for Heisman?

1 » No. 12 Florida Gators soccer (13-2-2, 7-1-1 SEC) continued its winning ways on Thursday by defeating the LSU Tigers (6-7-4, 3-3-3 SEC) 2-0 on the road in Baton Rouge, LA. Tied atop the Southeastern Conference with South Carolina, Florida earned the win with goals from freshman forward Taylor Travis (4’) and sophomore F/midfielder Natalia Torosian (71’). Redshirt senior goalkeeper Katie Fraine also made four saves. The Gators will play their final regular season match at home in Gainesville, FL, at the James G. Pressly Stadium this Sunday at 1:30 p.m. against Arkansas. The 2010 SEC Tournament runs from Nov. 3-7 in Orange Beach, AL.

2 » Florida has a track record for producing Heisman Trophy-winning quarterbacks. However, this year, it looks like a former Gators QB may have the opportunity to win that award for a rival school. As if you didn’t know already, Cameron Newton (now of the Auburn Tigers) has been tabbed as a frontrunner for the award, but if it was his choice he’d be competing for it while still wearing the Orange & Blue. “If it was up to me, I would still want to be at Florida,” Newton told ESPN early this week. “My heart is still at Florida because of the long-lasting relationships I have with my teammates there. Leaving them was the hardest part.”

Since there are no Gators on the list I will pull for the closest thing in Cam Newton. He made a mistake at Florida but he is really a good young man and still speaks highly about Florida.

Cams comments might not go to well with his new school! I’m glad he’s put his life back in order, however, these comments aren’t going to win him over with the players or the student body!

He always seemed like a high energy guy and a stand up person. I remember being completely shocked when the story broke on the whole computer fiasco. I thought he was definitely the next starter, but sometimes I think the Brantley name (and apparently some injuries to Newton) led to him falling to third on the depth chart. Glad to see him doing well, but I hope we have a chance to meet them in Auburn and Brantley and the boys grow up enough to blast them for the SEC title! Wishful thinking, I know, but I can still root for it to happen…

Any press is good press? You should get some more traffic at the site, so a silver lining? lol

  6. Mr2Bits says:

Good for Cam. I’m glad he is having this year at Auburn as he definitely wouldn’t have those stats at UF with our O-Line

  7. E-PAIN says:

Well, this site has a hell of alot more relevant info than the alligator, so keep up the good work my man

  8. Mr2Bits says:

@E-PAIN – Hold your tongue, without the Alligator back in college, we would have never known what bars had the best drink specials, what frats are on suspension for drugging the girls who they thought were 22 but were really only 16 and most importantly, the NY Times crosswords!

  9. 305gator says:

    la times crossword but agreed…

  10. Daniel M. says:

I unbookmarked The Alligator a LONG time ago. Seriously.

  11. El Meester says:

Yeah, the Alligator is what it is, but it’s no excuse for lame rips towards OnlyGators.com It’s amazing what some of these “print” people think of themselves because of their tradition. Like E-Pain said earlier, all we care about is relevant info. That’s why we come here. GatorSports.com used to be my main spot, but Adam has done such a better job here, that OnlyGators took over for me a long time ago.

    Keep it up Adam!

  12. SC Gator says:

And here I didn’t think anyone read the Alligator after graduation…
