Florida Gators basketball is on its way to putting together a strong Class of 2019 as the program added another big-time commitment on Monday evening when four-star center Omar Payne (Montverde, FL) announced a verbal pledge for the Gators on Twitter.
“100% Committed! Meet me at the swamp! #GoGators,” Payne wrote in a tweet.
The No. 38 overall player in the nation and a 10th-ranked center, Payne (6-foot-9, 250 pounds) is the second top-50 player to commit to Florida thus far in the 2019 cycle. Though Payne still must develop offensively, he will likely be able to contribute immediately for the Gators as an active defender and rebounder.
After taking official visits to Florida and Florida State in September, Payne decided to make his call on Monday. He had scheduled official visits at Ohio State, LSU and Louisville in October, but it is unknown whether he will still take those trips.
Payne joins five-star point guard Trey Mann (The Villages, FL), the No. 25 overall player in the nation, and guard Alex Klatsky as the Gators’ Class of 2019. Florida is still in pursuit of five-star forward Scottie Lewis (Eatontown, NJ), the 11th-ranked player nationally, as it looks to close out its class strong. Lewis is high school teammates with Klatsky and would give UF one of the top recruiting classes in the nation.
As it stands now, Florida’s class is ranked No. 15 in the nation and No. 5 in the SEC per 247Sports.
