No, it was not Jim McElwain’s tenure leading the program, the swamp green uniforms from 2017 or a string of off-field incidents, but the home of the Florida Gators caught fire on Saturday afternoon. As smoke billowed out of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, Gainesville Fire Rescue rushed to the scene and extinguished the blaze.
The fire was started by a maintenance tractor, according to the University of Florida, which said the cause of the blaze is still being assessed. No structural damage was done to the stadium, and no one was injured.
Luckily, we and head coach Dan Mullen are able to joke about the blaze now that it has been extinguished.
The Gators will open their 2020 season on the road at Ole Miss on Saturday, Sept. 26. Florida’s home opener comes the following week on Oct. 3 vs. South Carolina where the only fire the Gators hope to see will come from their offensive playmakers.
You know the Gators are gonna be on fire 🔥 this year. But we still have 2 weeks til kickoff.
