Just over a half hour after the book closed on the No. 25 Florida Gators‘ 27-16 upset loss at home to the Kentucky Wildcats, the hosts on Saturday night lost one of their starters.

Sophomore running back Adarius Lemons, who is listed as the Gators’ starting kick returner, wrote in a lengthy statement on Twitter late Saturday that he has decided to transfer from the program.

“I would like to announce that I am transferring from the university of Florida,” he wrote. “I’m going to miss some of the boys I’ve been playing with for the past two years I’ve been here, I feel I’ve learned a lot from the previous coaches that were here. I want to find a school I can help to my best ability and actually use my talent that God has blessed me with. Thank you farewell.”

Lemons did return kickoffs on Saturday, but he did not receive an offensive touch in the game. Five Gators got carries on the evening, though none got double-digit touches. Lemons averaged 7.2 yards per carry, taking 19 attempts for 136 yards as a reserve last season.

Almost one year ago, Lemons similarly threatened to transfer on Twitter, writing that a Week 3 contest would be his last game at Florida. He wound up staying with the Gators through the coaching staff transition from Jim McElwain to Dan Mullen.

Lemons was a three-star recruit in the Class of 2017 who was initially denied admission into Florida due to academics. He worked hard to improve his grades, and the Gators found a way to get him into their class ahead of last season.

Freshmen Iverson Clement and Dameon Pierce may benefit by Lemons’ departure by getting more looks both on offense and special teams. Redshirt junior Jordan Scarlett remains Florida’s primary ball carrier with junior Lamical Perine and sophomore Malik Davis also getting touches.
