Credit the Florida Gators for boosting their long-time rivalry with the Georgia Bulldogs before a snap has even been played in the 2019 season. Florida on Friday confirmed the transfer of former five-star linebacker Brenton Cox, the No. 23 player in the Class of 2018, from Georgia.

It is unknown whether Cox, who recently entered the NCAA transfer portal, will seek waivers from the NCAA and SEC to obtain immediate eligibility. Multiple reports noted that he was in a helmet practicing with the Gators on Friday.

Cox will enter 2019 as a true sophomore after registering 20 tackles (two for loss) and a sack in 13 games as a backup outside linebacker last season.

His departure from Georgia has come under strange circumstances. Though he was cited for possession of marijuana in April, there are no other disciplinary issues involving Cox that have been reported. However, reports recently surfaced that Cox had been dismissed from the team prior to entering the NCAA transfer portal. Head coach Kirby Smart and his assistants refused to address Cox’s status over the last couple of weeks.
