Gators TE Michael McFarland will transfer

Florida Gators redshirt freshman tight end Michael McFarland has decided to transfer out of the program, the University of Florida confirmed in a statement.

McFarland, a three-star recruit in Florida’s much-heralded 2010 signing class, becomes the sixth player to transfer away from the Gators since Will Muschamp was hired to replace Urban Meyer as head coach.

Senior cornerback Janoris Jenkins was dismissed from the team following two marijuana arrests in less than 90 days. Redshirt freshmen defensive end/linebacker Chris Martin and wide receiver Chris Dunkley as well as freshmen WR Javares McRoy and running back Mike Blakely all decided to transfer for various reasons.

“Michael and I have come to the conclusion that it is in his best interest to transfer from the University of Florida,” Muschamp said in release from the school. “We wish him the best as he continues his career somewhere else.”

Like Martin just one week ago, McFarland never had the opportunity to step on the field for the Gators and will leave the program without making any notable mark.

He was listed at the F-12 position in offensive coordinator Charlie Weis‘s spring depth chart, meaning he would play only in two tight end sets. Redshirt sophomore Jordan Reed, redshirt freshman Gerald Christian and freshman A.C. Leonard were all listed ahead of him at the position. Florida already has four-star TE Colin Thompson (Warminster, PA) committed for the 2012 season.

McFarland’s decision to transfer was first reported by InsideTheGators.com.

Not surprised he almost got grey shirted by meyer. With another TE in next years class he wouldn’t have seen the field anytime soon.

  2. Daniel M. says:

That was one crowded position. Good luck son.

Not shocked or upset by this. He was going to be a special teams guy at best, and we could us the extra scholarship.

Yes no surprise, can’t say that I blame him. Good luck to him and now we have another scholarship.

This one doesn’t hurt but now we are down to 71-72 players on the roster? We had better land a Texas-sized 2012 recruiting class and I don’t mean a bunch of 3 stars. It sounds like Muschamp is cleaning out the closets this summer ….. we’ll see the impact, for better or worse, in the fall.

  6. SC Gator says:

Much as I hate the expression this is a win-win. He wasn’t going to see the field much, if at all, and it gives us back a scholarship we can use where we aren’t so stacked.

I’m sorry this kids dream of wearing the O&B didn’t work out, wish him the best of luck in wherever he chooses to continue his career. Muschamp better start living up to that recruiting reputation, that’s all I know.

Does the new signing limit go in to place this year or next?
