Florida Gators WRs Dunkley, McRoy transferring

A pair of Florida Gators wide receivers have decided to transfer, the University of Florida announced on Friday. Redshirt freshman Chris Dunkley and freshman Javares McRoy will both continue their college careers at other institutions.

Dunkley, who was suspended from team activities this spring for academic reasons, has not announced where he will play.

“It’s been a great learning experience being here at the University of Florida,” he said in a release, “but I feel like it’s in my best interest to get a fresh start somewhere else.“

McRoy, who sat out the 2011 Orange & Blue Debut with what head coach Will Muschamp called a “medical procedure with his lung,” will join his brother on the Texas Tech Red Raiders, a school he initially committed to before switching to Florida.

“I enjoyed my time at Florida, but I really want the chance to play with my brother Ben, who is at Texas Tech,” he said in the release. “Florida has been very understanding and is giving me that opportunity.”

The Gators will enter the 2011 season with only nine scholarship receivers on the roster: redshirt senior Deonte Thompson; redshirt juniors Frankie Hammond, Jr. and Omarius Hines; redshirt sophomores Andre Debose and Stephen Alli; sophomores Robert Clark, Quinton Dunbar and Solomon Patton; and freshman Ja’Juan Story.

The departures of Dunkley and McRoy open up two additional scholarships Florida can use for the 2012 recruiting cycle.

“We wish both of these guys the best of luck in their future endeavors, both on and off the field,” Muschamp said.

“but I feel like it’s in my best interest to get a fresh start somewhere else”
Translation: “I’m going somewhere where the coaches don’t care if I get an education or not”

Exactly. Wish the young man only the best, but it looks like he didn’t really have the work ethic to succeed at a school that requires you to go to class

Hit the nail on the head…so he’ll end up at Auburn/Alabama/Ole Miss.

Maybe there’s more to it, but if it’s because of the academics, then he’s pretty dumb. Gotta work a little bit buddy, not everything will be handed to you on a silver platter.

Well, 2 more spots for Muschamp and Co. to fill. Go get ’em boys. Dorial Green-Beckham COME ON DOWN!

From the comments on both sides, it sounds more like his “academic issues” were some sort of ethic violation rather than pure scholastic. I wouldn’t be surprised to find out later that he had been caught cheating or plagiarizing or some other offense that could put him on academic probation. Kind of like Cam Newton, better to just start over somewhere else..

Dunkley must not have the right attitude. What did Muschamp say, if you don’t want to do it my way, you can see your way out. Good for him.

My kingdom for a couple more guys the size of Story. We have enough guys the size of Demps and Rainey. Need a deep threat that a QB can see.

It’s sad and unfortunate that Dunkley has to leave this way. Can’t blame McRoy if he wants to be with his brother though. Why can’t these kids figure out that an education is a huge deal? Look at Carlos Dunlap and how he came back to school to finish and graduate. Who knows good may come of this- maybe we’ll get even better players with these scholarships.

I dont think McRoy ever had Gainesville in his heart, as for Dunkley.. I dont think he could hang in such an elite program like ours. That being said, i think we need to use these openings to snag some elite, TALL, ball hawking recievers and after all of them see what coach BOOM and Weis has in store i think we’ll have a lot to choose from… GO GATORS!!!!! cant wait till fall—–

Good luck to both young men. Hopefully they will learn that you can’t cut & run evry time something gets hard. Sometimes you have to ‘man up’. We need to utilize these scholarships well. Very nervous about upcoming year …looking at the schedule and maybe a 7 and 5 season?!

  8. dp says:

Not worried at all…Florida is an elite school that is high on academics, ethics, and athletics. If you can’t balance the three, than you don’t deserve the scholarship…there are kids on a mile-long waiting list to pay to go to gainesville. Good luck to both of you. I hope this decision works out for you. Now Boom and Charlie…go get two Megatron-esque studs to fill this schollys! Go Gators!

Dunkley couldn’t hang academically. McRoy thought he wanted to be a Gator but after spring ball I think he saw the writing on the wall. In case youhaven’t noticed, manyof the people who haveleft or decommitted from last years group were under sized quick guys. WM is going after a totally different type of athlete at the receiver and DB position than Urban did.

    • Jesse C says:

I think its about time we got some bigger guys at WR and DB. If we want to compete for the SEC title in the near future, we need to get the big dudes like everyone else… Julio Jones, Ashlon Jefferies, etc. We need another Dallas Baker the touchdown maker.
