SIX BITS: Tebow, Andrews, baseball, softball, lax

By Adam Silverstein
April 1, 2010

1 » Between critics, supporters and analysts, former Florida Gators quarterback Tim Tebow always has plenty of people talking about him. You can add former USC Trojans safety Taylor Mays to that list. Mays – who has grown close with Tebow after appearances at college football awards shows, 2010 Under Armour Senior Bowl and 2010 NFL Scouting Combinegot defensive when asked about his new friend’s ability to transition to the NFL. “I don’t understand it. He did everything right,” Mays said. “It’s not like everybody thought he was going to be the first quarterback taken, so I don’t understand why they’re killing him like that. You’re looking at one of the most established players in college football, ever. Ever! All these people they’re talking about don’t have half the credentials he does.”

2 » While Mays was defensive, New England sports writer Tom Curran went on the offensive against Tebow Wednesday. Curran opines that Tebow’s very public meeting with New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick is out of character for the team and was perhaps done in order to boost Tebow’s 2010 NFL Draft stock and, in some way, help out his friend and Gators head coach Urban Meyer. Side note: Tebow spent two days in Boston; he was not just there for a dinner. Curran also questions what Tebow is as a person. “I mean, how do we know the kid’s a virgin? He talks about it. And just as it’s his right to talk about it, it’s the right of observers to wonder what the motivations for doing so are,” Curran wrote. “Is he a football player? A spokesman? A vessel of the Lord? A well-crafted public relations creation? All of the above?”

Four more BITS on Erin Andrews’ ESPN contract and future as well as results from baseball, softball and lacrosse…after the jump!

3 » Though currently taking a sabbatical from ESPN in order to compete on Dancing with the Stars on sister network ABC, former Gators dazzler Erin Andrews wants to remain at the Worldwide Leader. Andrews, whose contract is set to expire soon, is currently in negotiations to re-sign with ESPN to cover college football and basketball from the sidelines. “I want to stay covering sports. I love sports,” she told USA Today this week. “Where I am right now in my career, I have developed incredible relationships with coaches and athletes. There’s a really big trust and respect factor with all of these guys. I’m just really, really happy with the way things have progressed in my career.” However, other reports state she has larger aspirations and may look elsewhere if the network does not pony up the cash.

4 » No. 8/11 Florida baseball (18-6) fell Tuesday to the No. 4/6 Florida State Seminoles (20-4) 7-2 at a neutral site game at The Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. The Gators committed a season-high five errors that led to five unearned runs and gave the Seminoles the win. Sophomore designated hitter Tyler Thompson (1-2) scored the team’s lone runs with a home run in the second inning, his first in almost a year. Senior Jeff Barfield got the start but only pitched two innings; freshman Hudson Randal (2-2) was attributed with the loss though he only gave up a hit and a run in 2.1 innings.

5 » No. 6/9 Florida softball (24-4) had better luck Wednesday, defeating the Central Florida Knights (22-13) 4-3 in nine innings on the road at the UCF Softball Complex in Orlando, FL. Freshman infielder Brittany Schutte smacked a game-winning solo homer in the top of the ninth, winning the game for classmate Ensley Gammel (5-0) who pitched four scoreless innings of relief with six strikeouts to earn the win.

6 » Gators lacrosse (7-4) continued its strong play in its inaugural season with a 16-6 victory over the Oregon Ducks (4-7) Tuesday at Donald R. Dizney Stadium. Freshman midfielder Kitty Cullen scored a season-high five goals as the defense only allowed the Ducks three shots on goal and two scores after halftime.

Tebow doesnt “talk about being a virgin”. He was ASKED by a member of the MEDIA and he answered the question. Also, regarding your “side note”, he was NOT in Boston for upwards of 4 days….Saturday he was in Palm Beach, Sunday he was in Buffalo, and Monday he had dinner with Belichick. Tuesday he was in Nashville. Check your info much?

  2. Joe says:

(on Tom Curran’s remarks) that’s a conspiracy theory if I’ve ever heard one. What a joke.

  3. Kathy- Tebow spent at least two days in New England. In addition to dinner, he worked out for the team and went to the facility. I’m not sure why I wrote four in the first place. It is one of those things that happens when you write thousands of words each day.

  4. Joe says:

Adam, thank you for your hard work. I understand mistakes are made (as should anyone) and how much effort it must take to keep this site running.

  5. Ryan says:

    yeah Kathy calm down geez.

  6. npgator says:

That Curran is your typical New England Jack ass sports writer.

Adam…you’re a great man! I follow you on Twitter and check OGGOA many times a day, and I just have to say that your site is a a diehard Gators fan’s dream come true. I love it. On another note, Tom Curran is an idiot. I’m sure New England only brought Tebow in to do Urban a favor…..RIIIIIIIGHT! That’s a stretch if I’ve ever heard one. When it comes to Tebow’s pro prospects, I agree almost 100% with Andre Caldwell. I don’t think Tebow will ever be a phenomenal passer, but he’ll get the job done and get wins, like he always has. Think Ben Roethlisberger (on the field) or someone in that mold. Give him 2-3 years behind a veteran and then let him loose, and he will prove everyone wrong

  8. Joe says:

Lol, I like the (on the field) addition to that statement.

  9. FloridaMITCHELL says:

Haha yeah I had to add that in there!

  10. FloridaMITCHELL says:

By the way, anyone know where to find that Tim Tebow ‘The Chosen One’ documentary on DVD? Or is it even on DVD?

  11. That was part of an ESPN documentary called “Faces in Sports,” I believe. You can order the “Tebow Cam” footage from his final game here on OGGOA by clicking our Store ad to your right and buying the 2010 Sugar Bowl DVD.

  12. ReptilesRule says:

NO WONDER nobody wants to be a role model anymore! All you get is crap from people like the Boston writer. The very fact that he states that Tebow goes around talking about his virginity shows you he doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Another reporter just trying to create a headline without doing any research….

  13. Laura says:

Adam, I’ve been meaning to ask you if you know how much of the Tebow Cam footage is on that DVD. I still haven’t bought it yet b/c I haven’t been able to find out how much, if any, of that footage is included.

    • Laura- I actually posted about it a while back. The Teboe Cam is 100% on it, but they cut out a lot of the “boring” parts as otherwise it probably would have been quite boring.

If you decide to buy it, I hope you do so through our store! 😉

“By the way, anyone know where to find that Tim Tebow ‘The Chosen One’ documentary on DVD? Or is it even on DVD?”

It’s currently available over on youtube for free. It’s divided into 5 parts. Here’s part 1:

  15. Laura says:

By ‘boring parts’, do you mean they cut the stuff of him on the sidelines?

And if I do buy it, I will definitely buy it via your store. 🙂

  16. I haven’t had a chance to watch it yet. I’m assuming they cut-out any RB running plays, incomplete passes, him just standing around talking to people, etc.

  17. Laura says:

That’s why I haven’t bought it yet. Most of my favorite parts of the Tebow Cam were when Tim was simply on the sidelines. And those were probably the parts most likely to be cut.

  18. FloridaMITCHELL says:

Thanks Laura, I’m watching the Chosen One right now on YouTube! Wish they would release it on DVD someday but I doubt it…

  19. Laura says:

You’re welcome. I love that docu. It is possible to download it using various types of free software, incl RealPlayer (real.com). If you want to know more about how to download it, just post a comment here.
