Theismann: Tim Tebow should have retired

By Adam Silverstein
February 4, 2010

Former Washington Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann was interviewed in 1010XL of Jacksonville, FL, and made some inflammatory comments about former Florida Gators quarterback Tim Tebow and head coach Urban Meyer.

Theismann, according to Pro Football Talk, said Tebow should have retired after his senior season at Florida. “Rock star status preserved,” he said, while also saying that his mechanics are “poor” and that Tebow’s pride and ego are too great for him to retire before giving it a shot in the NFL.

“Obviously at Florida they don’t teach throwing the football,” Theismann continued. He added that Meyer and the Gators coaching staff has “no clue” how to prepare a quarterback to play “at the next level.”

He sounds like a bitter old man past his prime.

Somebody tell Joe Theismann that Urban Meyer’s primary duty is to win championships at Florida, NOT run a factory for churning out players to the NFL.

Perhaps Theismann’s peeved at Meyer for having said “I’m not going to Notre Dame – EVER” and keeping his word (for those who may not know, Theismann is a ND alum)? I detect that, just plain jealousy, or that he’s jumping on the Gator-hater bandwagon that seems to be in vogue lately.

Amazing how some people think criticizing others makes you more relevant. A National Championship, a Heisman winner, trips to Atlanta and SEC records too numerous to mention…..nah he can’t play and should quit. Sure Joe, now take your meds and lay back down, you’ll feel better soon……..

what a douche … tim tebow is a special player and the last time i checked the pros are not the end all be all as far as an athlete goes. there are many, many great college football players who did not do as well in the pros, but are very renowned and respected.

I had the “pleasure” of meeting Theismann many years ago. He was the key note speaker @ an awards banquet for a company I work for. He was paid to be there. After speaking, he refused to have his picture take or sign autographs — said he gets paid to do that. Ass.

Nice to see he hasn’t changed!! LOL

  6. Gatorfan33 says:

This coming from a guy that gets drunk and tries to kiss sideline announcers during a NFL game on national TV. Talk about someone who should have retired and walked away…………

  7. Joe says:

What a tard! Meyer’s staff has no idea to teach a QB how to throw yet Loeffler was responsible for players like Henne and Brady. Fact is Meyer and Tebow took the “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” route for his senior season. Anyone with half a brain could figure out changing the throwing motion of a guy who set a BCS record for passing probably isn’t the best way to win games.

  8. Joe says:

    I think that’s Joe Namath ?.?.?

  9. SC Gator says:

Hmm… I assume you are thinking of Joe Namath there Gatorfan33, unless there is some other incident I’m not aware of.

Joe Theismann’s always been an arrogant ass though, so no surprise there.

  10. HE15MAN says:

    Tebow breaks records….Theismann breaks femurs.

  11. justinole says:

what can I say ?….. it’s true, he sucks big time. Tebow should have been a full back, just retire meyer, there are some things more important, your health is one of them. Joe theismain was right, florida doesnt know how to prepare their quarterbacks which is why they won’t land christian Lemay next year !

  12. RSeegobin says:

I fail to see how Tebow’s “pride and ego” fits into Joe’s argument. The kid is just following his dream amidst all the controversy and negative talk. To me, at least, he is showing tremendous character and courage.

  13. Drew 4 Orange and Blue says:

Just goes to show you that money and fame might be sought after but they do not assure happiness…anyone see MJ’s HOF speech…probably the biggest figure in history of sports and talk about a miserable person!!!!

  14. Mr2Bits says:

Wow, this guy sounds like a bitter prick. I’m not getting the whole “crush his dreams speeches” some of these ass wipes are coming out with. Guess they need to get their name and face on TV somehow. Just astonished really.

Justinole, shouldn’t you worry about not losing to FSU and every other school in Florida next year? Don’t really recall FSU pumping prime QB studs into the NFL either there big dog.

  15. Escambia94 says:

I did not realize that the only purpose for college football was to develop NFL players. How many college coaches get a bonus for the success of their former players who are now in the NFL? NCAA football and NFL football are different sports. Maybe Tebow’s rock star success in college will not translate to the NFL, but that is mo reason to disrespect his college career and college coach. Besides, he just MIGHT succeed in the NFL. Give him a chance to prove everyone right or wrong.

  16. Mr2Bits says:

Also last I recall, Theismann coming out of college wasn’t setting record attendances for bowl games and other appearances. Tebow is an icon whether these washed up or sorry O-line players like it or not. I hope the Jags take Tebow because the second Uche Nwaneri blows his assignment intentionally, he will be shipped out.

Not even sure if they sell a Nwaneri jersey as its the first time I’ve heard of this dude but I can bet Tebow apparel will outsell Theismann any-day.

  17. UFGATORS says:

this dude’s a prick. really? should’ve retired? he needs a shot. if he sucks. he sucks. he plays 1 bad game and everyone’s all over it. i mean really? And Meyer Doesn’t know how to prepare a QB? Yeah, Sure, And If We Don’t get Christian LeMay, it won’t be because he doesn’t think he’s going pro at Florida. Tebow’s style was already the way it was before he got to Florida. Meyer’s had 1 QB at Florida, and everyone thinks he’s gonna Up & Quit ? Really ? I’m gonna love it when next year ; Brantley COMPLETELY ruins every defense. hahaha, GO GATORS!
