Statues of Tebow, Wuerffel, Spurrier at stadium?

If the enshrinement of “The Promise” speech outside Heavener Football Complex is not enough for you, former Florida Gators quarterback Tim Tebow may be immortalized in front of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium as a bronze statue, too.

The Gainesville Sun’s Pat Dooley has learned that Tebow along with former QB Danny Wuerffel and former head coach and QB Steve Spurrier will be enshrined in statues somewhere either inside or outside of The Swamp if everything goes as planned.

The goal is to not only honor the Gators’ three Heisman Trophy winners but also, arguably, the three most important players in school history. Dooley reports that the University Athletic Association has hired sculptor Sandy Proctor out of Tallahassee, FL, to work on the three statues and the process is underway (though there are, of course, a few speed bumps).

Proctor has already spent two hours with Wuerffel, will meet with Spurrier on Tuesday in Gainesville, FL, and plans to sit down with Tebow sometime in the future.

Former Florida wide receiver and current NBC Sunday Night Football color commentator Cris Collinsworth will be awarded the Pat Summerall Award on Thurs., Feb. 4 at the Legends for Charity Dinner. The award is presented to an individual with a connection to the NFL who has made a significant contribution to the sports field.

Please put this inside as it will be vandalized if not.

Has to be outside. Does anyone wish they would hold off on the Tebow stuff a little bit. I’m not a fan of putting a statue up of someone 1 year out of school. Same with his name on the stadium overhang

Sandy Proctor also did the Bowden statue outside of their stadium and is a well known artist. My dad would want the Spurrier statue to replicate the kick against Auburn his senior year. Wuerffel was more my era and just the “shot putting” throwing motion would be cool. For Tebow it would be neat to replicate the end of the superman run against FSU. Just my 2 cents…

  4. Doing all of the Heisman winners is the way to get Tebow’s statue up right away. Otherwise, no way they could put him up so soon. Personally, I thought “The Promise” plaque was up way too fast. Should be at least a four-year gap between graduation/departure and any enshrinement.

So Heisman winners get their jersey and names up on the stadium, their Heisman trophies shown in the Gateway of Champions, the eventual induction to the Ring of Honor, and now a statue outside the stadium? To me, its a little much.

I think we all agree that Tim deserves it, but I believe it is too soon to be putting up statues of the guy a couple months after he left school. Maybe take a couple years, then dedicate it to the three Heisman winners during some warm sunny football game in the fall. I know the Swamp would be rockin then.

To Adam, great job bud, best website on Gator sports on the net. Check here at least three/four times a day for breaking news. Gainesville Sun just doesn’t cut it anymore.

Is it the Orange/Blue game yet?

Love the idea! Hey, if Bama can have statues so can we!! Also would like to see all NC winning coaches incl Spurrier and Urban so honored as well. Also, outside the O Dome, Billy D and the 04’s. Back to back will probably never be done again, so lets do it right!!! You could have contributors names engraved in a brick base at the statues or on a plaque. Minimun contribution $500…

  8. On Campus- Thank you for the comments. There is an Orange & Blue Debut countdown clock in the right panel on most pages.

Ridiculous to make statues IMO. I love the gators and the memorabilia, but a statue is way over the top. The Saban statue is an eye-roller and these statues are eye-rollers as well. What are they going to do? I suspect many Gators will shake their heads when seeing them, witnessing how the players are being immortalized, non-Gators will use it as a target for Gator delusional fanaticism, and Gators who scoff at other school’s statues will now have empty talk since their own school is showing the same excessive obsession. I think these are just wrong, and I know a lot of other Gators feel the same way.
