1 » Football has the Swamp Things, basketball has the Rowdy Reptiles and baseball’s student section’s name is down to these five finalists: Bleacher Creatures, Left Field Lizards, McKethan Maniacs, Raucous Reptiles and The Screwballs. The baseball team is set to throw its first pitch of the 2010 season in one month on Feb. 19, and the University of Florida is prepared to have the student body vote on what to name McKethan Stadium’s student section. The winning entry will receive a baseball autographed by head coach Kevin O’Sullivan, Nike Gators gear and the opportunity to throw out a first pitch before a game. Voting begins on Jan. 19, and an announcement will be made on Jan. 25. Students can also register to be an official part of the 2010 student section and receive some special benefits. OGGOA has decided to officially endorse “Left Field Lizards” as the student section’s new name. “Bleacher Creatures” is a slang term that should have been noticed, “Raucous Reptiles” is too close to “Rowdy Reptiles,” “The Screwballs” is not specific enough to the Gators…and we just don’t like “McKethan Maniacs.” If you are a UF student and loyal OGGOA reader, fight the good fight for “Left Field Lizards!”

2 » Florida basketball fans may be growing impatient with senior forward Dan Werner, but head coach Billy Donovan and Werner’s teammates have nothing but respect for the four-year player. “Sometimes I don’t think people understand Dan and what he brings to the team,” Donovan told the Orlando Sentinel’s Jeremy Fowler. “He’s an incredible help defender, he’s very, very smart, you can put him in any position on the floor and he knows what’s going on. People tend to focus on his shooting, but there are so many things that he can do. He is a little limited athletically.”

Wondy Pierre-Louis UPDATE » Joseph Goodman of The Miami Herald is reporting that Pierre-Louis’ bond has been set at $85,000 by the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office. The former Gators cornerback has not yet turned himself over to authorities.

Wondy needs to turn himself in. He said himself that he has a lawyer and I am sure that lawyer is encouraging him to turn himself in. The longer he waits the worse it gets for him. And just for the record, I think the Left Field Lizards is pretty good and should win. P.S. Congrats on the single day record for site, I’ve spread the word about the sire to all the Gators I know!

Am I the only one who thinks these student nicknames should come naturally and not from some joke poll? I still hate the Swamp Things.

  3. Mr2Bits says:

Left Field Lizards is something awful. Are we the Florida Gators or Florida Iguanas? The name has nothing to do with Florida or its mascot.

  4. BleacherCreatureFan says:

Bleacher Creatures is NOT a slang term! It applies to baseball more than any of the other options, and is particularly applicable because the UF baseball student section is located in the rowdy left-field bleachers at McKethan Stadium!

Our fans are tireless supporters of the Gators, taking a roll call for the team at the start of each game and harassing the opposing team’s outfielders like true Bleacher Creatures!

A gator is a reptile. A lizard is a reptile. Other than that small similarity, the Left Field Lizards has nothing to do with the Florida Gators. We need a student section that we can be proud of, one that stands the test of time. VOTE BLEACHER CREATURES!!

  5. I wonder if “BleacherCreatureFan” is the one who submitted the name to UF? LOL It most certainly is a slang term commonly used to denote something entirely different than simply rabid baseball fans. But best of luck to you.

  6. What Slang? says:

What does the slang term “Bleacher Creatures” mean? If you Google “Bleacher Creatures” and “slang” nothing turns up but this blog. It’s also not on Urban Dictionary.

I really like the name Bleacher Creatures for the student section. Left Field Lizards is weak…how is that supposed be intimidating to another team? Taking the Florida GATORS and calling them “lizards”? I think that’s doing our school an injustice.

  7. 1) I don’t care either way about the name to be honest.

    2) The name of a student section is not going to instill fear in an opponent.

    3) Baseball-wise, Bleacher Creatures is the name of the group of Yankees fans who do the roll call every game. So in that respect, it is a complete rip-off of an already existing fan section and would not be unique to UF in any way, shape or form.

    4) “Bleacher creature” is also a slang term used to describe a girl who is quite promiscuous with the members of any particular team. Quite common saying actually.

    5) You are entitled to your opinion. I have no problem with your opinion or your campaign for “Bleacher Creatures.” Have fun!
