Jaguars GM “can’t imagine” acquiring Tim Tebow

Despite reports to the contrary at the conclusion of the 2012 regular season, new Jacksonville Jaguars general manager David Caldwell all but slammed the door shut on quarterback Tim Tebow joining the team next season.

“As far as Tim goes, he is a member of the New York Jets. I can’t imagine a scenario where he would be a Jacksonville Jaguar,” Caldwell said Thursday in his introductory press conference, affirming moments later that would remain the case should he be a free agent. “I can’t imagine a scenario where he would be a Jacksonville Jaguar…even if he’s released,” he added. ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported on Dec. 23, 2012 that it was a “virtual certainty” Tebow would wind up playing for Jacksonville in 2013.

One day later, NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport released a similar report, stating emphatically that Tebow “will be a Jaguar” in 2013 and that the team would even consider trading for him in order to assure that they acquire his services.

Though neither Mortensen nor Rapoport’s reports were linked to Jaguars owner Shahid Khan, he stated one year ago that he would have had no problem trading for Tebow and would have “absolutely” drafted Tebow if he was owner of the team back in 2010.

It now appears as if Khan has decided (or Caldwell has convinced his owner) to forget about acquiring Tebow this season despite the fact that Jacksonville will have an open competition at quarterback.

With NFL starting jobs now likely off the table for 2013, the Tebow watch now centers on whether any team will even give him an opportunity to compete for a back-up role should he be released from his contract with the Jets as expected.

I really thought Jacksonville would be the good guy here. He deserves a chance to go home to Florida and the “virtual certainty” I saw here was Everbank filled to the brim with people on Sundays. Is there anyone else out there who will treat him fairly and give him a chance?

I agree with Nathaniel and without Tebow, unless Khan spends a hell of a lot of money drafting some talent this off season “i can’t imagine a scenario where the fans will fill the seats”. Here we go again…..With the 2nd pick in the 2013 NFL draft the Jacksonville Jaguars select….. Joe shit the rag man…long snapper….Montanan Valley State A&M.

Jags actually had pretty good fan support this year, especially given how bad they were. It’s really a Catch-22 for the Jags, bring Tebow in and if they don’t think he’s good enough to start the fans will scream for him every time the starter throws an incompletion. I suppose they really couldn’t do any worse though… I think Tim could have done himself a favor when he came out and quelled the media firestorm that always surrounds him by keeping a very low media profile. Why would a team want to bring in a backup QB who brings a media circus with him?

He shouldn’t be a back-up. He should be the starter. As it was last year in Denver, the show would be a roller coaster ride of awesomeness!!!!

As much as I love Tebow. He isn’t the answer for the jaguars at quarterback nor did they sell much more tickets in the two games that he has played in Jacksonville. Also in 2011 when he was starting for the broncos he had much better receivers than the jaguars had and still had a worse passer rating than Gabbert.

Shorts and Blackmon are very competent receivers, and with Tim and MJD the Jags would have the #1 rushing attack in the league. This team would be instantly better with Tim. Did you see the Jags play this year? Yikes!

  5. Joe says:

I can’t imagine a Jags home game next year that isn’t blacked out

  6. Gators22 says:

I hope he gets his shot, but, if for some reason he doesn’t…oh well.

His legacy remains as one of the all time Gator greats and he will continue to impact lives.

I feel like its still so early that something can and will change here. Khan loves Tim and the city of Jacksonville. And money. He loves money.

  8. lee says:

look for him to be a viking next year

  9. Justin says:

The jags haven’t had a blackout in 3 years without Tebow FYI.

Don’t kid yourself here. Putting tarps over your upper-deck and reducing the capacity to circumvent NFL blackout rules does not mean the organization is healthy and booming with attendance. Jags won 2 games last year and are an irrelevant fan base outside of Jacksonville. They are the only pro football team that you would be hard pressed to find a fan of!

The jags have the 4th smallest market and the 20th highest ticket sales this year. They out sold the steelers, bears, lions, and outsold every other nfl team in Florida. Maybe you shouldn’t kid yourself. The jags seat are covered to give them a competitive ticket advantage based on the size of their market, the stadium is so large to accommodate college games which in this region sale better than most of the large markets in the nfl.
