Fighting through perceived character issues, migraines and injuries, former Florida Gators wide receiver Percy Harvin has been honored by the Associated Press with its 2009 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award.

Harvin, drafted No. 22 overall in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings, has compiled 60 receptions for 790 yards and six touchdowns from the slot so far this season. He is also the team’s main kick returner, bringing back 42 kickoffs for 1,156 yards and two touchdowns including a fantastic 101-yard score against the San Francisco 49ers. In addition to his WR/KR duties, Harvin has been used as a running back, rushing 15 times for 135 yards.

Recently named as the NFC’s kickoff return specialist for the 2009 Pro Bowl, Harvin is one of seven Gators participating in the NFL playoffs and was named Florida wide receiver of the decade by OGGOA on New Year’s Eve.

He is the third Gators football player win Rookie of the Year honors, following Emmitt Smith (Dallas Cowboys, 1990) and Jevon Kearse (Tennessee Titans, 1999).
