Eight Florida Gators invited to 2016 NFL Combine

The official list of invitees was released by National Football Scouting on Friday with eight former Florida Gators have been invited to participate in the 2016 NFL Scouting Combine (National Invitational Camp) at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

The event, which is held for six days from Feb. 23-29, consists of more than 300 players being put through a series of drills, tests and interviews while more than 600 NFL personnel in attendance (including coaching staffs, executives, player personnel and medical staffs) look on and evaluate each of them. It amounts to a major job interview for these athletes to participate in ahead of the start of the 2016 NFL Draft on April 28.

The Florida Gators defense was expected to be depleted in a major way with a number of players looking to enter the 2016 NFL Draft early. Quick Hits: Florida Gators embarrassed by Michigan 41-7 in Citrus Bowl rout

No. 19 Florida Gators (10-4) football played terribly for its fifth consecutive game as the No. 14 Michigan Wolverines ran wild on Friday to pull off a dominant 41-7 victory in the 2016 Citrus Bowl in Orlando.

Since routing Georgia on Halloween, Florida has averaged 15.4 points per game, scoring just 24 in its last three contests combined. It’s hardly the end to the seemingly magical season that head coach Jim McElwain and Gators fans envisioned.

Early bowl practices give Florida Gators a glimpse into future; QB Luke Del Rio included?

The 2015 season began with promises of the Florida Gators being fixed … eventually. It was 2016 when Florida was supposed to be whole again with quarterback Will Grier entering his third year, then-new head coach Jim McElwain in his second and the coach’s first full recruiting class set to join the program.

My how things can change over four months.

Grier’s emergence came to fruition … only for the player to get suspended for a full year by the NCAA and then decide to transfer from the program. McElwain had the Gators’ offense humming under Grier as Florida rolled to a 9-1 start … only to be manhandled in back-to-back games as the offense appeared as inept as it was under Will Muschamp.

Still, the Gators exceeded expectations in 2015, which means they will only be greater for Florida and its now-veteran coach in 2016. And before UF even settled in to practice for Michigan ahead of the 2016 Citrus Bowl on Jan. 1, the team was focused on what it will look like next season.

The Florida Gators will lose two offensive starters to the 2016 NFL Draft as juniors running back Kelvin Taylor and wide receiver Demarcus Robinson have decided to forego their final year of eligibility, head coach Jim McElwain confirmed Monday.

“Yeah,” McElwain said when asked if the players would be declaring. The coach later added that both were “doing a great job” in practice ahead of the bowl game.

Update: Following McElwain’s announcement, Robinson sent a tweet in which he said he has not declared for the NFL Draft. This story will be updated when there is a resolution to the matter.

Florida coach Jim McElwain named 2015 SEC Coach of the Year; five Gators named All-SEC

Guiding the Florida Gators to a 10-3 regular-season record in his first year with the program, head coach Jim McElwain on Tuesday was named the 2015 SEC Coach of the Year.

The three-game improvement for the Gators made Florida just one of two teams nationally to accomplish that feat in consecutive seasons (Temple). McElwain also became the first Gators coach to lead the team to 10 wins in his first season.

UF was as high as No. 8 in the College Football Playoff Rankings under McElwain just one season after not even sniffing a spot in any of the top 25 polls.
