Billy Horschel: ‘I love representing Gator Nation.’

Former Florida Gators golfer Billy Horschel capped the best three weeks of his young career – and life – last month when he won the 2014 Tour Championship, brought home a total of $11.44 million by clinching the 2014 FedExCup title and, most importantly, was in the delivery room when his wife gave birth to their first child.

Playing the three best weeks of golf as a professional, Horschel first pocketed $2.03 million by winning the 2014 BMW Championship and finishing second in the 2014 Deutsche Bank Championship. Adding his Tour crown and FedExCup bonus, Horschel boosted his payday to $13.47 million in a three-week span and $14.8 million for the PGA Tour season.

Despite his hot streak, Horschel was not chosen to play for the United States in the 2014 Ryder Cup due to his success occurring too late in the process. Instead, he was able to spend more time at home at his recently-expanded family.

Two days after Horschel set up his family for life, his wife and fellow former Florida golfer, Brittany Horschel, gave birth to baby Skyler on Sept. 16.

Quite a month, huh?

OnlyGators.com got a unique opportunity to speak with Horschel this week as he prepares for the 2014-15 golf season. One of the hottest names in the sport, Horschel was not an easy get considering he is one of the hottest names in the sport. Nevertheless, the PGA Tour was more than accommodating.

ADAM SILVERSTEIN: Let’s start with what’s important: how are the wife and baby?
BILLY HORSCHEL: “Skyler and Brittany are doing really great. They’re both healthy. Brittany is loving being a mom. She’s doing a heck of a job. We’ve been very blessed in the sense that Skyler has been a very, very easy baby. She sleeps well, doesn’t fuss a lot. If you could sort draw up the ideal baby – in the way for her to act for the parents to not go crazy – in my opinion, this would be it. We’ve been very blessed and very lucky.”

Billy Horschel wins Tour Championship and FedExCup, brings home $11.44 million on Sunday

Former Florida Gators golfer Billy Horschel capped the best three weeks of his young career on Sunday by winning the 2014 Tour Championship and bringing home $11.44 million – a $1.44 million winner’s share as well as a $10 million bonus for clinching the much-desired 2014 FedExCup title.

Horschel finished -2 (68) on Sunday and -11 for the tournament, which was held at East Lake Golf Course in Atlanta, Georgia, edging competitors Rory McIlroy and Jim Furyk by three strokes each.

He opened the event by shooting four-under 66s on Thursday and Friday, extending his lead with a one-under 69 on Saturday to enter Sunday with a two-stroke lead.

Paired Rory McIlroy, winner of two majors in 2014, Horschel shot a two-under 33 on the front nine Sunday before bogeying 10. After four consecutive pars on holes 11-14, he birdied 15 to regain his one-stroke lead.

Billy Horschel leading Tour Championship, planning to stay and play if wife goes into labor

Billy Horschel is playing the best golf of his young career.

The 27-year-old former Florida Gators golfer, who has finished 1-2 in his last two tournaments and earned $2.03 million already this month, is currently leading the 2014 Tour Championship by two strokes and has no plans to let anything deter him from winning the entire thing.

Horschel (-8) has Rory McIlroy, Jason Day and Chris Kirk (all -6) on his heels as he looks to win a share of the event’s $8 million purse. Also on the line for Horschel and a number of other golfers is the FedExCup title and the $10 million bonus that goes with it.

Having already earned nearly $3.4 million this season, he is hoping to close out a victory over the weekend with plenty on his mind as his wife and fellow former Florida golfer Brittany Horschel is pregnant with a baby girl due in two weeks.

So, what would Horschel do if his wife suddenly goes into labor this weekend?

FOUR BITS: Muschamp and Foley, Noah, Horschel

1 » Florida Gators athletic director Jeremy Foley took head coach Will Muschamp/s place during the weekly WCA Gator Hotline Show, which airs on Thursday evenings during football season. (In fact, Muschamp will only appear on the program five of the 12 times it airs in 2014.) Anyway, Foley answered a number of phone calls during the program, including one in particular from a voice that sounded oddly familiar. “Bill from Gainesville” jumped on the air to praise Foley for the job he was doing, suggesting that he should permanently sit in for Muschamp on the program. He then took a jab at Foley’s favorite team, the Boston Red Sox, before jumping off the air. With no attempt made to disguise his voice, “Bill from Gainesville” was quite obviously Muschamp himself having some fun with his boss. Check out the audio below.

TWO BITS: Horschel wins; Murphy, Calathes out

1 » Former Florida Gators golfer Billy Horschel on Sunday earned his second PGA Tour victory, his first in one year and five months, after shooting -14 and winning the 2014 BMW Championship. Just last week, Horschel choked on the 18th hole during his final round at the 2014 Deutsche Bank Championship, finishing in a three-way tie for second behind Chris Kirk of Georgia. He did not make the same mistake on Sunday, shooting -1 over the final 12 holes to best two-time Masters Tournament winner Bubba Watson, also a UGA alum. Horschel collected $1.44 million on Sunday to go along with the $579,000 he banked last week, bringing his season-long earnings to nearly $3.4 million.

4 BITS: Horschel, tough schedule, Florida Field

1 » Former Florida Gators golfer Billy Horschel was in contention to win the 2014 Deutsche Bank Championship…all until his second shot on the final hole of the event. Trailing by one stroke, Horschel was 198 yards away from the hole and set to reach the green in two on the par-5 18th, a hole he birdied thrice before, when he instead chunked a 6-iron into the marsh. Instead of finishing with an eagle or birdie, which respectively would have won him the tournament or forced a playoff, Horschel posted a bogey on 18. He finished in a three-way tie for second, losing the event (and the chance for the full winner’s purse of $1.44 million) to Georgia’s Chris Kirk. Horschel still brought home $597,333. Horschel’s second-place finish vaulted him from 82nd to 20th in the FedExCup, and he should receive a spot in the 2014 Tour Championship. He could also be a dark horse candidate for the United States’ Ryder Cup team.

FOUR BITS: Villegas, Cooper, White, Jenkins

1 » Former Florida Gators golfer Camilo Villegas captured his fourth career PGA Tour title over the weekend when he won the 2014 Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, North Carolina, and took home a winning share of $954,000. Villegas, who had not won an event since finishing first at the 2010 Honda Classic four years ago, edged Bill Hass and Freddie Jackson by a single stroke with a -17 on the tournament. He opened and closed the event by shooting 63 on Thursday and Sunday. Villegas jumped up to 37th in the new FedExCup standings, moving up 68 spots from No. 105. He is the second former Gators golfer to win on tour this year as Matt Every picked up a victory in the 2014 Arnold Palmer Invitational back on March 23. Every is currently ranked 35th in the FedExCup.

4 BITS: USA Basketball, PGA, Tebow, Shanahan

1 » Minor surgery to address a “core muscle injury” has kept Golden State Warriors power forward David Lee off the USA Basketball men’s national team as it reports to training camp from July 28 to Aug. 1 ahead of the 2014 World Cup of Basketball in Spain. However, two former Florida Gators have made the 19-player training camp roster with Washington Wizards guard Bradley Beal and Dallas Mavericks forward Chandler Parsons both being given the opportunity to make the 12-man team. As it turns out, Parsons was not one of the 28 players who made the original pool as announced on Jan. 22. His tremendous play last season, coupled with Lee’s inability to compete, opened up a spot for the man who just signed a three-year, $46 million contract. It is the third-straight season that Lee has undergone surgery in the offseason; he averaged 18.2 points and 9.3 rebounds per game in 2013-14.

2 » Two former Florida golfers – instead of three as previously scheduled – are competing at The Open Championship but only one is currently above the assumed cut line after the first round. Billy Horschel shot a +1 (73) on Thursday and is currently tied for 66th at seven shots behind the leader, Rory McIlroy. Coming in nearly 20 places behind Horschel is Matt Every, who stroked a +3 (75) and is in a 19-way tie for 105th. Unfortunately, former British Open champion Mark Calcavecchia, who looks forward to the event each year, had to withdraw from the event due to travel issues. “Right now I thought I’d be on [the] 3rd hole of mini practice [round] at the Open!! Best we could do is a flight to West Palm Beach,” wrote the 54-year-old 1989 winner on Twitter. “Totally depressed I can’t be at my fave tourney in the world!! American Airlines killed us for no reason weather was fine #dontgetit” As a prior British Open champion, Calcavecchia qualifies for an automatic spot each year until he turns 60 years of age, meaning he only had the opportunity to play in seven (now six) more British Open events. He currently plays on the Champions Tour, which is restricted to golfers over 50.
