6 BITS: Matt Elam suffers season-ending injury, Florida QB Will Grier has gained 24 lbs. since 2014

1 » Former Florida Gators safety Matt Elam struggled during his second season with the Baltimore Ravens in 2014. Looking to bounce back and regain his starting role this season, Elam may be faced with an even greater obstacle to overcome. According to The Baltimore Sun’s Aaron Wilson, Elam “may have torn his biceps” and was scheduled to undergo an MRI on Sunday to determine whether he has indeed suffered a season-ending injury. A completely torn biceps would sideline Elam for the season; a partial tear would likely put him on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list for the start of the campaign, though his return would still be questionable. Elam has been fighting with fellow former Florida safety Will Hill for the starting strong safety job; Hill supplanted Elam at the position during the 2014 campaign.

Update: ESPN‘s Ed Werder confirmed Tuesday that Elam’s injury is indeed a full tear of his biceps; Elam will therefore miss the entire 2015 season. He will be placed on the Ravens’ injured reserve and look to rejoin the team in 2016.

6 NFL BITS: Tebow’s throwing motion, Haden fights R-word, Jenkins and Mincey negotiating

1 » USA Today went somewhat in-depth on former Florida Gators quarterback Tim Tebow with Josh Peter penning a feature that looks at how his throwing motion and football mind has evolved while fighting to keep his career alive. Below is a highlight quote from the feature, which you can read in full by clicking here.

“I don’t feel like I’m the same player from a passing standpoint and a mechanics standpoint,” Tebow said. “I love the process and I love that I have a chance to get better,” he added. “That’s an important mindset not just for football, just in life. When you have that mindset, then you won’t look back and you won’t regret anything. No matter how much you succeeded, no matter how good you were at something, you can never look back and say, ‘I regret I didn’t go all the way.'”

2 » Though former Florida cornerback Janoris Jenkins missed out on first-round money due to off-field concerns, it appears as if he may be close to striking a substantial contract extension with the St. Louis Rams, which took a chance on him with the No. 39 overall pick in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft. Jenkins has been a solid starter for the Rams over the last three seasons, making his share of highlight plays and also being on his fair end of offensive highlights for the St. Louis’ opponents. Still, Jenkins will likely command second- or third-tier money, which for a cornerback these days can be a more-than-solid payday. Jenkins picked off seven passes and scored five touchdowns from 2012-14.

4 BITS: Spikes pleads guilty, Gators in NBA

1 » Former Florida Gators linebacker Brandon Spikes pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of a hit-and-run accident that occurred on a highway in Massachusetts on June 7. Spikes, who was released the very next day by the New England Patriots and remains an NFL free agent one month later, was issued one year of probation along with fines and the loss of his driver’s license, according to WBZ 1030 News Radio. Putting the issue to bed was important for Spikes, who should wind up on a team at some point this offseason. While limited, he is still at least a two-down contributor as one of the highest-graded run-stopping linebackers in the league.

2 » Giving Gators point guard Nick Calathes the opportunity to play in the NBA after the player started his career overseas, the Memphis Grizzlies continue to make a concerted effort to hold on to the reserve floor general. The Grizzlies decided to make Calathes a qualifying offer, turning him into a restricted free agent and allowing Memphis the right to match any offer sheet he may sign with a team. Though rumors have Calathes interested in going back overseas for significantly more money and a greater role on a team, he has not given any indication that he plans to leave the United States at this time.

4 NFL BITS: Brandon Spikes charged with four counts after leaving scene of car accident

1 » Massachusetts State Police announced Friday that it has been determined that the Mercedes Maybach sedan owned by former Florida Gators linebacker Brandon Spikes was not only driven by Spikes the night it got into an accident but hit another car rather than a deer as he told the OnStar operator that responded to the crash. As such, Spikes will be charged with four courts by the state: leaving the scene of a personal injury crash, operating a motor vehicle negligently to endanger, speeding and failure to stay within marked lanes. The New England Patriots, which had signed Spikes to a one-year deal in the offseason, cut him the same day the initial report of his car being involved in an accident was released.

FOUR BITS: Patriots LB Brandon Spikes released after his car was found abandoned in a crash

1 » One day after it was reported by FOX 25 out of Boston that a Maybach Mercedes registered to New England Patriots linebacker Brandon Spikes was found abandoned on the median of a highway, the former Florida Gators player was released by the team. According to FOX 25, The OnStar representative from the car “told state police the driver of the care reported hitting a deer.” However, while an injured deer was not found near the scene, another car called in that it was rear ended at approximately the same time as the crash involving Spikes’s car. Spikes signed a one-year, $1 million deal with the Patriots (with up to $1 million in incentives), returning to the team that drafted him after spending a season with the Buffalo Bills. His original tenure did not end well in New England, despite his close relationship with owner Bob Kraft, and his return to the franchise was a surprise. If this story sounds relatively familiar that is a vehicle belonging to former Miami Dolphins LB Channing Crowder was also abandoned on a highway in January 2008.

Urban Meyer on Tim Tebow: Media attention curbed NFL interest, opportunities

During a radio interview two years ago, Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer propped up Tim Tebow‘s future as an NFL quarterback, noting that he still thought Tebow would go out and “win a Super Bowl” before his time was up.

That was when Tebow was on the outs with the New York Jets. Since then, despite getting a training camp invitation with the New England Patriots that offseason, Tebow has not seen the field during an NFL regular season game.

On Tuesday, Meyer appeared on The Dan Patrick Show and was asked about the future of his Heisman Trophy winner with the Florida Gators. Suffice to say, Meyer still fully believes in Tebow’s chances to succeed in the NFL but explained that due to circumstances beyond his control, he has not had the same opportunities as others.

FOUR BITS: Tebow, Parsons, Jackson, Easley

1 » Philadelphia Eagles vice president of player personnel Ed Marynowitz spoke with the media on Thursday and provided some perspective on the team’s decision to sign former Florida Gators quarterback Tim Tebow to a one-year, non-guaranteed contract. “We worked him out and we saw improvement from the last time we saw him,” he said. “[We] had exposure to him live when we played New England when they practiced here. When we worked him out, we saw a great deal of improvement in him.” Ultimately, the Eagles decided “that it was an opportunity to bring in somebody who could compete for a spot,” and all indications are that Tebow will get that chance, a legitimate one at that – unlike some of his other stops..

2 » Forward Chandler Parsons, in his first year with the Dallas Mavericks, has been ruled out for the remainder of the season after suffering what appears to be a serious right knee injury. Parsons, who was averaging 15.7 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.4 assists in 33.1 minutes per game for Dallas, was a full-season starter for the Mavericks and the team’s key free agent signing in the offseason. The Houston Rockets, Parsons’s former team, leads the Mavericks 2-0 in their first-round series. Fellow former Florida F Corey Brewer is averaging 15.0 points in 26.5 minutes per game for Houston thus far in the series. He’s shooting .500 from the field and .571 from beyond the arc.
