FOUR BITS: Tebow, Parsons, Jackson, Easley

1 » Philadelphia Eagles vice president of player personnel Ed Marynowitz spoke with the media on Thursday and provided some perspective on the team’s decision to sign former Florida Gators quarterback Tim Tebow to a one-year, non-guaranteed contract. “We worked him out and we saw improvement from the last time we saw him,” he said. “[We] had exposure to him live when we played New England when they practiced here. When we worked him out, we saw a great deal of improvement in him.” Ultimately, the Eagles decided “that it was an opportunity to bring in somebody who could compete for a spot,” and all indications are that Tebow will get that chance, a legitimate one at that – unlike some of his other stops..

2 » Forward Chandler Parsons, in his first year with the Dallas Mavericks, has been ruled out for the remainder of the season after suffering what appears to be a serious right knee injury. Parsons, who was averaging 15.7 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.4 assists in 33.1 minutes per game for Dallas, was a full-season starter for the Mavericks and the team’s key free agent signing in the offseason. The Houston Rockets, Parsons’s former team, leads the Mavericks 2-0 in their first-round series. Fellow former Florida F Corey Brewer is averaging 15.0 points in 26.5 minutes per game for Houston thus far in the series. He’s shooting .500 from the field and .571 from beyond the arc.

Former Florida Gators quarterback Tim Tebow will sign a contract with the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday, according to Jay Glazer of Fox Sports.

According to Glazer, the “Eagles [are] looking for a fourth [quarterback] for their offseason program, but it’s Tebow’s best chance to get back in the league.” Furthermore, Philadelphia is “convinced [Tebow has] improved a lot” after discussing his development with quarterback guru Tom House.

Former Florida Gators QB Tim Tebow worked out for Philadelphia Eagles on Monday

Former Florida Gators quarterback Tim Tebow spent Monday working out for the Philadelphia Eagles, ESPN.com‘s Adam Schefter reported.

Tebow, who did not play in the NFL last season after only being signed for training camp in 2013 by the New England Patriots, has spent much of the last 18 months in California being trained by quarterback guru Tom House.

According to Schefter, the Eagles do not plan on signing Tebow “at this time.”

It was rumored that Tebow would consider participating in the inaugural NFL Veterans’ Combine but that did not come to fruition.

The former Heisman Trophy winner’s accuracy has been his biggest issue at the professional level as he’s completed just 47.9 percent of his passes for an average of 6.7 yards per toss His 17-to-9 touchdown-to-interception ratio for his career is admirable, as are his 989 rushing yards on 197 carries (5.0 per attempt) with 12 rushing scores.

TWO BITS: Scottie Wilbekin, Percy Harvin, Franco

1 » Former Florida Gators point guard Scottie Wilbekin, a rookie in Australia’s National Basketball League, continues to lead the Cairns Taipans towards the organization’s first title. With the best record in team history, the Taipans (21-7) defeated the Perth Wildcats 71-64 on Friday in the NBL Semifinals. Wilbekin, Cairns’ Most Valuable Player and Defensive Player of the Year, registered game-highs of 23 points and 10 rebounds while going 7-for-11 from the field, 3-for-4 from beyond the arc and 6-for-6 at the charity stripe. He also posted four assists and two turnovers in 36:38. Taipans coach Aaron Fearne believes Wilbekin should be under strong consideration for league MVP honors, especially if he leads Cairns all the way to a title. “He’s extremely valuable to us and has been a big focus for opposition teams. For a 21-year-old to come out and have the impact he’s had, he should be a frontrunner (for MVP honors) in my opinion,” Fearne told The Cairns Post on Thursday.

A source close to Wilbekin told OnlyGators.com that the former Gators star will enter the NBA D-League immediately upon returning to the United States. He will join the league’s free agent pool therefore be available to get signed by any team.

2 BITS: SEC/Big 12 Challenge, Miller, Hernandez

1 » The Southeastern Conference and Big 12 announced Thursday that the annual SEC/Big 12 Challenge, which began last season, will undergo a significant format change. Instead of being 10 games played over three days in the fall, it will now be 10 games played in one day early in the spring. That date has been set for next season with all 10 games tipping off on Saturday, January 30, 2016, though match-ups have not yet been determined at this time. “Moving the Big 12/SEC Challenge later int he season will raise the profile of this event and give our coaches, student-athletes and fans the attention that it deserves,” said Mike Slive, the SEC’s commissioner. The 10 games will all be played on ESPN networks with the four SEC teams not given match-ups going head-to-head against each other on the SEC Network that day.

The Florida Gators wound up playing a home-and-home series against Kansas in the first two iterations of the event, hosting the Jayhawks last season and travelling to Lawrence, Kansas, this fall. Florida is expected to host an SEC/Big 12 Challenge game in 2015-16, though renovations to the Stephen C. O’Connell Center would have proved that difficult if the game was played during its previously-scheduled window. Whether the event was moved to help accommodate UF remains to be seen, but the scheduling adjustment was not just made for next season but for the duration of the event’s existence.
